Electronic Arts has permanently shut down BioWare after more than 30 years, ending development on franchises like Mass Effect and Dragon Age.
The closure is part of wider EA restructuring and job cuts affecting roughly 400 roles, halting early work on the next Mass Effect.
BioWare had created some of the most well-known titles in the video game industry, including Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The team employed around 50 people, and its last major release was Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Although there was a small team working on the initial development of a new game in the Mass Effect series, that work has now been discontinued.
Changes and layoffs at Electronic Arts
BioWare's closure is part of broader cuts at Electronic Arts, which announced it was laying off about 400 employees, or 3% of its workforce, following the company's ownership change in August.
As part of the same changes, Respawn and DICE studios are merging, with the aim of focusing on a future first-person action game.
