Electronic Arts has closed the historic studio BioWare after 30 years, impacting 400 total positions and leading to 50 layoffs.
Former producer Mark Darrah suggests EA may sell rights to franchises like Mass Effect and Dragon Age amid wider studio consolidation.
The future for Mass Effect and Dragon Age
Former BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah said in a YouTube video that Electronic Arts may sell the rights to games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age. Darrah worked at the studio from 1997 to 2021.
According to him, because BioWare has closed, the parent company is unlikely to continue these games on its own. Electronic Arts was acquired in August 2026 by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund and companies Silver Lake and Affinity Partners, in one of the largest acquisitions in history. Due to discussions about debt repayment and restructuring, the sale of inactive titles is presented as a possibility, but there is no guarantee at this time.
Changes and leaks
As part of the restructuring, Electronic Arts is also merging Respawn and DICE studios, focusing on the Sims and Skate series.
