A few weeks ago I went looking at a tiny, abstract object and found a pattern that looked solid. I then stated a conclusion about it that was too strong. A pre-registered follow-up falsified my own words. The correction isn't a retreat — it's a quantitative law that predicts the thing I thought was binary. This post is the whole arc, including the part where I was wrong.
The object
Take the squarefree integers — numbers divisible by no perfect square (1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, …; you drop 4, 8, 9, 12, …). List the gaps between consecutive ones: 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 3, 1, … Now map each gap g to a single bit: the parity of its binary digit sum, P_2(g) — this is the Thue–Morse value of g. You get a ±1 stream, one bit per gap.
Then measure serial memory at lag k with S^(k) = Σ u_n·u_{n+k}, scored against an exact marginal-preserving permutation null, reported as a z-score. Define a sieve to be "lag-2 unique-quiet" when lag 2 is the single quietest lag in 1..8 and |z(2)| ≤ 0.1 × median{|z(k)| : k≠2}.
The squarefree gap stream has this signature. It is specifically a base-2 cancellation: via the identity P_2(g) = P_4(g) XOR P_4(⌊g/2⌋), two individually-loud base-4 stride streams nearly cancel at lag 2. That XOR structure is why the whole thing is base-2 specific.
The experiments (all pre-registered)
Each test is a perturbation of the squarefree sieve, with the prediction locked in a notes/*-prereg.md file and committed before the sealed compute job runs. That matters: it means I can't rationalize a surprise after the fact.
Does enlarging the set keep the signature? "Squarefree-except-p" means: still squarefree everywhere, except at one prime p you allow one extra square factor (admit p²·m with p ∤ m). This adds back a thin class while keeping every even integer.
At N = 2×10⁷, relaxing at p = 2, 3, 5, 7 destroyed the signature every time (the quiet lag jumps away from 2; the ratio sits at 1.14, 0.77, 0.34, 0.17 — all far above the 0.1 threshold, vs. 0.015 for the control). Four for four. So I wrote the conclusion: the signature needs the strict squarefree structure, and the exponent-cap relaxation destroys it at every prime.
Here's the mistake. Look at those ratios again:

They're falling, fast, and monotonically. The admitted extra class {p²·m : p∤m} has density 1/p² − 1/p³ → 0, so "squarefree-except-p" → squarefree as p grows. That forces r(p) toward the control 0.015 — which means it has to cross below the 0.1 threshold eventually, and the detector would then score the signature present again. "Destroyed at every prime" couldn't be literally true. So I pre-registered the test that could prove me wrong.
The crossover. Relaxing at p = 11, 13: r(11)=0.0777, r(13)=0.0603 — both below 0.1, signature present. The "every prime destroys it" prediction was falsified (crossover_detected = True). The honest statement is now quantitative: a single-prime relaxation weakens the signature by an amount that shrinks with p, destroying it only below a prime-size crossover sitting between 7 and 11.
Convergence. Does it cleanly converge, or wobble back? At p = 17, 19, 23: present at all three, ratio still falling monotonically (0.0420, 0.0366, 0.0291), no second crossover.
A law, not just a trend. The real question is whether the excess over the control follows the density of what I added. Model r(p) − r_control ≈ C·(1/p² − 1/p³). Fit the dimensionless C on the primes ≤ 23, lock it to a pre-registered band [5, 11], then test it out-of-sample at three new primes, 29/31/37.
It held: k(29)=7.86, k(31)=7.84, k(37)=8.42, all inside [5, 11]. Across all twelve relaxed primes 2…37 the coefficient stays near 8. So:

The strict-squarefree localization isn't a hard wall. It's a smooth, density-controlled approach to the control, and now it's predictive.
What I don't know
- Why ≈ 8? I have no mechanism. The coefficient is an empirical fit confirmed out-of-sample, not a derived constant. That's the honest status.

Everything is in one repo. Every number above re-derives offline from committed data/*.json by a pure-standard-library test (no numpy, no network) that brute-forces the permutation-null formula on tiny sequences, re-computes every z-score from the raw (n_eff, s, S), and re-runs the detector:

Honest limits
Every measurement is at N = 2×10⁷ (10⁸ for the lag-1 baseline); no asymptotic claim is made, only a statement about these regimes. A "null" means "no lag-2 unique-quiet signature at this N," and in every negative the quiet lag is demonstrably not 2 (it's 5, 7 or 8), so each absence is unambiguous rather than a power problem. The detector is a fixed, frozen ratio test committed in code; a different discriminator might draw the boundary elsewhere, which is exactly why every threshold lives in the repo and not in prose.
Nearest prior work I could find is Dietmann–Elsholtz–Shparlinski (Prescribing the binary digits of squarefree numbers, Trans. AMS 369, 2017) — but that's about the squarefree integers and their own digits, not the gaps between them, not the digit-sum parity of those gaps, and not serial correlation. If you know of prior work that already does this, please open an issue. A correct refutation is as useful to me as a confirmation.
