An in-depth look at EV battery longevity factors, examining how charge cycles, chemical variations like NMC and LFP, thermal thresholds, and fast-charging impacts influence overall battery health over time.
How to charge the battery correctly
Continuous charging to 100% should be avoided whenever possible. Lithium iron phosphate batteries should ideally be fully charged once a week, while nickel manganese cobalt systems are recommended to be kept around 80% to 90% most of the time. In general, keeping the car's charge between 20% and 80% helps with battery longevity.
The effect of temperature
Temperature plays a crucial role in battery health. Charging in high temperatures approaching 40 degrees Celsius can actively accelerate wear. To avoid this, drivers can charge the vehicle early in the morning, overnight, or use a garage.
Additionally, fast chargers should be avoided unless absolutely necessary due to the heat generated during the process. The ideal temperature for a vehicle when stationary is between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius.
