Rivian Pitches EV and Autonomy Tech to Outside Automakers

Rivian is considering selling more of its vehicle technology beyond the cars it builds itself. In a TechCrunch Disrupt interview, CEO RJ Scaringe said the company could expand its Volkswagen Group joint venture into AI and autonomy and license Rivian technology to “many different brands.” [1]

The reported scope includes Rivian’s electrical architecture and software, as well as its AI models and autonomy stack. The remarks describe a possible direction, not a completed commercial expansion: the interview report does not identify a new licensing customer, price, signed contract or rollout schedule. [1]

A technology platform already shared with Volkswagen

Rivian’s March 2026 quarterly filing describes its business as combining electrical architecture, end-to-end software, an autonomous-driving platform, artificial intelligence and propulsion. It says the company’s zonal network architecture and software stack form the basis of Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies, the joint venture developing software-enabled capabilities for global markets and multiple vehicle platforms. [2]

Volkswagen’s account of the venture says the work includes zonal architecture and functional software for future Volkswagen Group and Rivian models, with over-the-air updates and highly automated-driving features. Rivian has said it intends to use the resulting technology in its R2, R3 and R3X vehicles and update its existing fleet. [3]

That existing partnership gives context to Scaringe’s comments: the software and electronics collaboration is established, while expansion into a wider set of AI and autonomy products remains under consideration. Earlier trade reporting in May described discussions about extending the Volkswagen relationship, while saying Rivian’s assistant and autonomy platform were not then part of the joint venture’s remit. [4]

A possible second route to market

Licensing could give Rivian a way to earn from its engineering beyond direct vehicle sales. Automakers that do not want to build every layer of an electric-vehicle platform themselves could become potential customers, if Rivian can adapt the systems to different brands and vehicle programs. That is the strategic implication of the proposal, not a disclosed revenue stream today.

The next evidence to watch is concrete: named customers, specific modules, commercial terms and production vehicles using the licensed technology. Until then, Rivian’s message is an ambition to broaden its role from automaker and Volkswagen partner toward a potential technology supplier.
