An overview of BMW's upcoming iX5 electric SUV architecture, featuring a 144-kWh battery pack, 460kW NACS fast-charging capabilities, and advanced driver assistance systems like Symbiotic Drive designed for hands-free highway navigation.
Autonomy and charging
The new model features a 144-kilowatt-hour battery, which the company estimates offers a range of more than 450 miles on a single charge. In a test drive, a BMW engineer drove an iX5 from San Francisco to Los Angeles non-stop, covering more than 500 miles and arriving at its destination with 50 miles of range remaining.
The vehicle supports very fast high-power charging, reaching from 10% to 80% in 22 minutes.
Automatic doors and design
The iX5 features doors that open and close automatically. By pulling a small part at the top of the door, special sensors detect movement and open it, while also checking for any obstacles. When the driver gets in the car and presses the brake, the door closes by itself.
The model tested was the iX5 60 xDrive, which has an output of 570 horsepower.

Technology and screens in the interior
Inside, there's a 17.9-inch central touchscreen that comes with a built-in AI assistant. Higher up on the dashboard is a panoramic display that stretches from edge to edge and is divided into six customizable sections.
There is also an optional 14.6-inch screen for the passenger. If the driver's rearview camera detects that their gaze is directed towards the passenger's screen, the video pauses and the screen goes dark until the driver looks away again.
Driving assistance system
The company's driver assistance system allows the driver to take their hands off the steering wheel when driving on a highway. At the same time, the driver can adjust the speed manually without deactivating the system.
Prices
The internal combustion engine version X5 50e starts at $77.500, while the electric iX5 starts at $79.800.
