Windows 11 Display Problems? 10 Ways to Fix Graphics and Screen Issues

You open a video.

The screen flickers.

You try to play a game — the resolution is wrong.

Or your second monitor isn't detected at all.

You might think:

"Is my graphics card dying? Do I need a new PC?"

Probably not.

Display and graphics problems are a common type of Windows 11 issue. They can happen after a Windows update, a driver conflict, or a misconfigured setting.

The good news? Many display issues can be fixed without replacing hardware.

This guide covers 10 practical ways to fix display and graphics problems on Windows 11 — from simple tweaks to driver updates.

Why Is My Display or Graphics Not Working Properly on Windows 11?

Display problems can happen for many reasons:

10 Ways to Fix Display and Graphics Problems on Windows 11

Fix 1: Check Your Display Cable and Connections

Before you change any settings, check the basics:

• Is the cable securely plugged in at both ends?
• Try a different cable (HDMI, DisplayPort, etc.)
• Try a different monitor or TV to isolate the issue
• If using a laptop, check if the display works on an external monitor

Pro tip: If the external monitor works but the built-in display doesn't, the issue is likely with the laptop screen or its connection.

Fix 2: Restart Your PC

A full restart can fix temporary graphics driver issues.

How to do it:

1. Click Start → Power → Restart
2. Wait for your PC to reboot
3. Check if the display works

Note: Choose Restart — not Shutdown. Windows Fast Startup can sometimes prevent drivers from reloading properly.

Fix 3: Update Your Graphics Driver

A corrupted or outdated graphics driver is one of the most common causes of display issues.

Before you start: If possible, download the latest graphics driver from your GPU manufacturer's website before uninstalling the current driver.

How to update the driver:

1. Open Device Manager (right-click Start → Device Manager)
2. Expand Display Adapters
3. Right-click your GPU (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel) → Update driver → Search automatically for drivers

For better results:

If a normal driver update doesn't help: Consider reinstalling the graphics driver using your GPU manufacturer's recommended method (clean installation).

Fix 4: Check Your Refresh Rate

A mismatched refresh rate can cause screen flickering, stuttering, or a feeling of lag.

How to check and change:

1. Open Settings → System → Display
2. Scroll down and click Advanced display
3. Under Choose a refresh rate, select the recommended refresh rate for your monitor
4. If you're troubleshooting flickering, you can also test a different supported refresh rate
5. Click Apply

Pro tip: If you don't see the refresh rate you expect, your cable or monitor may not support it. Try a different cable.

Fix 5: Change Screen Resolution

An incorrect resolution can make everything look blurry, stretched, or too small.

How to change:

1. Open Settings → System → Display
2. Under Display resolution, select the recommended resolution (marked "Recommended" by Windows)
3. Click Keep changes if it looks correct

Pro tip: If the recommended resolution isn't available, your graphics driver may need updating.

Fix 6: Check Your Multi-Monitor Settings

If your second monitor isn't detected, try these steps:

How to detect a second monitor:

1. Press Win + P to open the display projection menu
2. Select Extend or Duplicate to test if the monitor works

If the monitor isn't detected:

1. Open Settings → System → Display
2. Scroll down and click Multiple displays
3. Click Detect (if available)

If still not detected:

• Check the cable connection
• Try a different port on your PC
• Ensure the monitor is powered on and set to the correct input

Fix 7: Disable Hardware Acceleration

Hardware acceleration can sometimes cause display issues in specific apps (especially browsers and video players).

How to disable in browsers (Chrome/Edge):

1. Open Chrome/Edge → Settings → System
2. Toggle Use hardware acceleration to Off
3. Restart the browser

How to disable in Windows:

1. Settings → System → Display → Graphics
2. Click Change default graphics settings
3. If the option is available, toggle Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling to Off
4. Restart your PC

Fix 8: Check HDR Settings

HDR (High Dynamic Range) can sometimes cause washed-out colors or display issues.

How to check and adjust:

1. Settings → System → Display
2. Under HDR, toggle HDR to Off (temporarily)
3. Check if the display looks normal

If HDR is causing issues:

• Update your graphics driver
• Check if your monitor supports HDR
• Use the Calibrate HDR tool in Windows Settings

Fix 9: Run SFC and DISM

Corrupted system files can cause display issues.

How to run SFC and DISM:

1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
2. Run:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

1. Wait for completion
2. Run:

sfc /scannow

1. Wait for completion
2. Restart your PC

Pro tip: This fixes many system-wide issues, not just display problems.

Fix 10: Adjust Power Settings

Power-saving modes can throttle your GPU, causing display issues.

How to adjust power settings (Windows 11):

1. Open Settings → System → Power & battery
2. Under Power mode, select Best performance (if available)
3. If you're using a laptop, plug it in before selecting Best performance

Alternative (if Power & battery is not available):

1. Search Power Options in the Start menu
2. Select High Performance (if available)
3. If you don't see it, click Show additional plans

Note: On laptops, this may reduce battery life — use only when plugged in.

What If You Want to Monitor Your PC Automatically?

If you're troubleshooting recurring Windows problems, it can also help to know what changes are happening on your PC around the time an issue appears.

That's why I built SysPulse — a lightweight Windows security and monitoring tool.

SysPulse can:

• Detect new processes and show their full file paths
• Monitor CPU and RAM anomalies
• Detect USB connections in real-time
• Detect startup changes
• Send Telegram alerts for monitored events
• Use less than 30MB of RAM

You can set it up and let it monitor your PC in the background — so you know when something changes, even if you're not at your desk.

Final Thought

Display and graphics problems on Windows 11 are frustrating — but they're often fixable.

Start with the simplest fixes:

1. Check your cables and connections
2. Restart your PC
3. Update your graphics driver

If those don't work, move to refresh rate, resolution, or HDR settings.

The key: Start with the simplest checks and move toward driver or system repairs only when necessary.
