The Bing Wallpaper app on Windows 11 introduces automated daily redirects to via Microsoft Edge following desktop clicks.
We examine the behavior, lack of opt-out toggles, and user experience implications.
How the process works
This action is not continuous, as it is triggered at most once every 24 hours. When the user is directed to the Bing page, the system suggests changing the default search engine to Bing, as well as installing an add-on to display wallpapers in the browser's new tabs. If the user chooses to enable these suggestions, the settings are changed automatically.
In the current version of the app, there is no option to disable this automatic redirect. This practice has caused a backlash, especially as it follows a previous use of the same app to promote a TV series, reinforcing users' concerns about how services are promoted through the operating system.
