Windows 11 Very Slow After 2026 Updates? Here's How to Fix Performance Issues

You install the latest Windows update.

You restart your PC.

And then — everything is slow.

Apps take forever to open. File Explorer lags. The fan is loud. RAM usage is through the roof.

You might think:

"Is my PC too old for Windows 11? Do I need to upgrade my hardware?"

Probably not.

Some Windows 11 updates released in 2026 have been associated with performance issues for some users. For example, the June 2026 cumulative update (KB5094126) has been linked to system freezes, severe lag, and high CPU usage, as reported by multiple users on Microsoft's official Q&A forums and other platforms[reference:0][reference:1].

The good news? Many performance problems after updates can be fixed without reinstalling Windows.

This guide covers 11 practical ways to fix slow performance on Windows 11 after updates — from simple tweaks to advanced repairs.

Why Is Windows 11 So Slow After 2026 Updates?

Several factors can cause slowdowns after updates:

11 Ways to Fix Slow Performance After Updates

Fix 1: Check Task Manager for Resource Hogs

The first step is to identify what's consuming your system resources.

How to check:

1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
2. Go to the Processes tab
3. Sort by CPU, Memory, or Disk usage
4. Look for any process that's using unusually high resources

Common culprits after updates:

• Antimalware Service Executable — Windows Defender scanning
• Service Host: SysMain — SuperFetch preloading
• Windows Update running in the background
• Third-party antivirus scanning

What to do:

• If it's a temporary process (like a scan), wait for it to finish
• If it's a known app (like a browser), close it
• If it's a system process and it's constantly high, continue with the fixes below

Fix 2: Disable Unnecessary Startup Apps

Some updates can add new apps to startup without your permission.

How to disable startup apps:

1. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc)
2. Go to the Startup tab
3. Sort by Startup Impact
4. Right-click and Disable anything you don't need immediately

Common offenders:

• Spotify
• Discord
• Adobe Creative Cloud
• Game launchers (Steam, Epic, etc.)
• Zoom / Teams

Pro tip: You can always open these apps manually when you need them.

Fix 3: Turn Off Visual Effects

Windows animations and transparency effects can slow down your system — especially after updates.

How to disable visual effects:

1. Press Win + R, type sysdm.cpl, press Enter
2. Go to the Advanced tab
3. Under Performance, click Settings
4. Select Adjust for best performance (disables everything)
5. Or select Custom and keep only:
   • Smooth edges of screen fonts
   • Show thumbnails instead of icons
6. Click Apply → OK

What you gain: A snappier, more responsive PC.

Fix 4: Change Power Plan to High Performance (With Caution)

Sometimes updates reset your power plan to Balanced or Power Saver.

How to check and change:

1. Search Power Options in the Start menu
2. Select High Performance (if available)
3. If you don't see it, click Show additional plans
4. If still not available, create a new plan:
   • Click Create a power plan
   • Select High Performance
   • Name it Gaming Performance or High Performance
   • Click Next → Create

Note: On laptops, this may reduce battery life and increase heat — use only when plugged in and if you are comfortable with the trade-offs.

Fix 5: Run Disk Cleanup (Including System Files)

Updates often leave behind old files that take up space and slow down your system.

How to run Disk Cleanup:

1. Press Win + R, type cleanmgr.exe, press Enter
2. Select your C: drive → Click OK
3. Click Clean up system files
4. Select C: again → Wait for the scan
5. Check:
   • Windows Update Cleanup
   • Temporary files
   • Previous Windows installations (if present)
   • Delivery Optimization Files
6. Click OK → Delete Files

What you gain: Freed space that can help improve performance.

Fix 6: Disable Windows Search Indexing (If on HDD)

Windows Search indexes your files to make searches faster. On HDDs, this can cause significant slowdowns.

How to disable it (optional):

1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, press Enter
2. Find Windows Search
3. Right-click → Properties
4. Change Startup type to Disabled
5. Click Stop → Apply → OK

What you lose: Instant file search results. You can still find files — it just takes a moment longer.

Note: This is most effective on HDDs. On SSDs, the impact is usually small.

Fix 7: Disable SysMain (SuperFetch) — Optional

SysMain preloads apps to speed up startup. On older systems, it can cause disk usage spikes.

How to disable it:

1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, press Enter
2. Find SysMain
3. Right-click → Properties
4. Change Startup type to Disabled
5. Click Stop → Apply → OK
6. Restart your PC

Note: This is an optional tweak. It may slightly increase app loading times but can significantly reduce disk usage on older systems — especially those with HDDs and high disk usage.

Fix 8: Update Drivers (Especially Chipset and Graphics)

Outdated or incompatible drivers can cause performance problems after updates.

How to update drivers:

1. Open Device Manager (right-click Start → Device Manager)
2. Expand categories (especially Display Adapters, System Devices, and Network Adapters)
3. Right-click → Update driver → Search automatically for drivers

For better results:

• Visit your motherboard or laptop manufacturer's website
• Download and install the latest Chipset drivers, Graphics drivers, and Storage controller drivers

Pro tip: For NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel graphics, use their official tools (GeForce Experience, Adrenalin, or Intel Driver & Support Assistant) for automatic updates.

Fix 9: Run SFC and DISM

Corrupted system files from a bad update can cause slowdowns.

How to run SFC and DISM:

1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
2. Run:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

1. Wait for completion (10–15 minutes)
2. Run:

sfc /scannow

1. Wait for completion
2. Restart your PC

Pro tip: This fixes many system-wide issues, not just performance problems.

Fix 10: Adjust Page File (Virtual Memory)

Windows uses a page file as virtual memory when RAM is full. A poorly sized page file can cause performance issues.

How to check and adjust:

1. Press Win + R, type sysdm.cpl, press Enter
2. Go to the Advanced tab
3. Under Performance, click Settings
4. Go to the Advanced tab
5. Under Virtual memory, click Change
6. Make sure Automatically manage paging file size for all drives is checked — this is the safest option for most users

Only change this if: You're running low on disk space and know what you're doing. Avoid disabling it entirely.

Fix 11: Change File Explorer to Open "This PC" (Optional)

By default, Windows 11 File Explorer opens to the Home page, which loads recent files and cloud content. This can slow down File Explorer.

How to change it:

1. Open File Explorer
2. Click the View menu → Options → Change folder and search options
3. Under the General tab, change Open File Explorer to: from "Home" to "This PC"
4. Click Apply → OK

What you gain: File Explorer opens faster without loading cloud files, recent activity, or OneDrive data.
