Windows 11 Audio Not Working? Here's How to Fix Sound Problems

You open a video.

You press play.

The video runs — but there's no sound.

You check the volume. It's not muted.

You restart your PC. Still nothing.

You might think:

"Is my sound card broken? Do I need a new PC?"

Probably not.

Audio problems are one of the most common issues in Windows 11. They can happen after a Windows update, a driver conflict, a wrong setting, or just randomly.

The good news? Many audio issues can be resolved in minutes.

This guide covers 9 practical ways to fix sound problems on Windows 11 — from simple checks to driver updates.

Why Is My Audio Not Working on Windows 11?

Audio problems can happen for many reasons:

9 Ways to Fix Audio Problems on Windows 11

Fix 1: Check the Physical Connections

Before you change any settings, check the basics:

• Is your speaker or headphone plugged in properly?
• Is the power cable connected (if using powered speakers)?
• Is the volume dial on your speaker turned up?
• Are Bluetooth headphones paired and connected?

Pro tip: Try plugging your headphones into a different device (like your phone) to verify they work.

Fix 2: Run the Audio Troubleshooter

Windows 11 has a built-in troubleshooter for audio problems.

How to run it:

1. Open Settings → System → Sound
2. Scroll down and click Troubleshoot common sound problems
3. Follow the on-screen instructions

Alternative: Open Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Audio → Run

What it does: This tool checks for common audio issues — like disabled services, driver problems, or wrong output devices — and attempts to fix them automatically.

Note: The exact path to the troubleshooter may vary slightly depending on your Windows 11 version and updates.

Pro tip: Run this before trying more advanced fixes.

Fix 3: Check Your Output Device

Sometimes Windows switches to the wrong output device — like sending sound to your monitor instead of your headphones.

How to check:

1. Open Settings → System → Sound
2. Under Output, make sure the correct device is selected
3. If you see multiple options, try switching to another one

Alternative: Click the sound icon in the taskbar → click the arrow next to the volume slider → select the correct output device.

Pro tip: If the correct device isn't listed, skip to Fix 5.

Fix 4: Check Volume Levels and Mute Settings

Sometimes sound is muted — but it's not obvious.

How to check:

1. Click the sound icon in the taskbar
2. Make sure the master volume is not muted and is turned up
3. Click the sound icon → Volume mixer (or right-click → Open Volume mixer)
4. Check that your app's volume is not muted or set too low

Also check: If you're using headphones or speakers with a physical volume dial, make sure it's turned up.

Fix 5: Restart the Windows Audio Service

The Windows Audio service manages all sound on your PC. If it's stopped or stuck, sound won't work.

How to restart it:

1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, press Enter
2. Find Windows Audio
3. Right-click → Restart

If the service is stopped:

• Right-click → Start
• If the service fails to start automatically, consider changing Startup type to Automatic — but only after checking that the service isn't disabled intentionally.

Pro tip: Also check Windows Audio Endpoint Builder — restart it as well.

Fix 6: Update or Reinstall Your Audio Driver

A corrupted or outdated audio driver is one of the most common causes of audio issues.

Before you start: If possible, download the latest audio driver from your PC or motherboard manufacturer's website before uninstalling the current driver.

How to update the driver:

1. Open Device Manager (right-click Start → Device Manager)
2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers
3. Right-click your audio device → Update driver → Search automatically for drivers

If that doesn't work, reinstall the driver:

1. Right-click your audio device → Uninstall device
2. If Windows shows the option, check Delete the driver software for this device
3. Click Uninstall
4. Restart your PC
5. Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver automatically

If Windows doesn't reinstall the driver: Install the driver you downloaded earlier from the manufacturer's website.

Common audio drivers/devices:

• Realtek (most common on motherboards)
• Intel (common on laptops)
• NVIDIA (HDMI audio)
• AMD (HDMI audio)

Fix 7: Disable Audio Enhancements

Windows audio enhancements can sometimes cause conflicts or poor sound quality.

How to disable them:

1. Open Settings → System → Sound
2. Click your output device → Properties (or Device properties)
3. Under Enhancements (or Effects):
   • Toggle Enhance audio to Off
   • Or uncheck Enable audio enhancements

Alternative (via Control Panel):

1. Open Control Panel → Sound
2. Right-click your output device → Properties
3. Go to the Enhancements tab
4. Check Disable all enhancements
5. Click Apply → OK

Fix 8: Check App-Specific Audio Settings

Sometimes one app has no sound while others work fine.

How to check:

1. Click the sound icon in the taskbar → Volume mixer
2. Check if the specific app is muted or set to a very low volume
3. Adjust its volume

For individual apps:

• Check the app's own volume settings
• Some apps (like browsers) have their own mute buttons
• Make sure the app isn't muted in Windows Sound settings

Fix 9: Perform a System Restore (Last Resort)

If audio stopped working recently and nothing else helps, you can roll back.

How to do it:

1. Press Win + R, type rstrui.exe, press Enter
2. Select a restore point from before the problem started
3. Follow the on-screen instructions

Note: System Restore doesn't affect your personal files — only system settings and installed programs.
