Windows 11 Update Causing Problems? Here's How to Roll Back and Fix It

You install the latest Windows update.

You restart your PC.

And then — nothing.

A black screen. A boot loop. Or your Wi-Fi is gone.

You might think:

"Did my PC just die? Do I need to reinstall everything?"

Probably not.

2026 has seen several Windows 11 updates that caused issues for some users. From boot failures to broken Wi-Fi, Microsoft has had to release emergency fixes for some of its updates.

The good news? Most update problems can be fixed without reinstalling Windows.

This guide covers how to identify problem updates, roll them back safely, and prevent future issues — so you can get your PC back to normal.

2026's Problematic Windows 11 Updates

How to Identify Which Update Caused the Problem

Before you roll back, you need to know which update broke your PC.

If your PC still boots normally:

1. Open Settings → Windows Update → Update history
2. Look at the list of recently installed updates
3. Note the KB number of the most recent update

If your PC won't boot normally:

• Boot into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) by force-restarting your PC 2–3 times during boot
• Go to Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Uninstall Updates
• You'll see recent updates listed — note the KB number

How to Roll Back a Problematic Update

Fix 1: Uninstall from Settings (If Your PC Boots)

1. Open Settings → Windows Update → Update history
2. Click Uninstall updates (at the bottom of the page)
3. Find the problematic update (e.g., KB5074109, KB5077181, etc.)
4. Select it → click Uninstall → follow the prompts
5. Restart your PC

Fix 2: Uninstall from WinRE (If Your PC Won't Boot)

1. Boot into Windows Recovery Environment (force restart 2–3 times during boot)
2. Go to Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Uninstall Updates
3. Select Uninstall latest quality update (or Uninstall latest feature update)
4. Follow the prompts
5. Restart your PC

Fix 3: Use System Restore (If You Have a Restore Point)

1. Boot into WinRE → Troubleshoot → Advanced options → System Restore
2. Select a restore point from before the problematic update was installed
3. Follow the prompts — your personal files will not be affected

Fix 4: Use Command Prompt (Advanced)

1. Boot into WinRE → Advanced options → Command Prompt
2. Run this command (replace xxxxxxx with the actual KB number):

wusa /uninstall /kb:xxxxxxx

Note: This command may not work for all updates, particularly if they are part of a combined LCU+SSU package. If it fails, use the graphical Uninstall Updates option in WinRE instead.

How to Prevent Future Update Problems

1. Pause Updates Temporarily

1. Open Settings → Windows Update
2. Click Pause updates and select a pause length. In Windows 11, you can typically pause updates for up to 5 weeks (35 days). After the pause ends, you must install updates before pausing again.

Note: Windows 11 Home allows pausing updates, but you cannot completely disable them forever.

2. Delay Updates After Release

Wait a few days before installing new updates. If issues are reported, you can skip the problematic ones.

3. Create a System Restore Point Before Updates

Always create a restore point before installing updates. If something breaks, you can quickly roll back.

4. Use Group Policy (Windows Pro/Enterprise)

1. Press Win + R → type gpedit.msc → OK
2. Go to Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → Windows Update
3. Configure policies to control update behavior

5. Disable Automatic Driver Updates

1. Group Policy Editor → Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → Windows Update
2. Enable Do not include drivers with Windows Updates

What If You Want to Monitor Your System After Fixing Updates?

Once you've rolled back a problematic update, you'll want to know immediately if something else goes wrong.

That's why I built SysPulse — a lightweight Windows security and monitoring tool.

SysPulse can:

• Detect new processes and show their full file paths
• Monitor CPU and RAM anomalies
• Detect USB connections in real-time
• Detect startup changes
• Send Telegram alerts for monitored events
• Use less than 30MB of RAM

You can set it up and let it monitor your PC in the background — so you know when something changes, even if you're not at your desk.

You can find it at: syspulse.pro
