Windows 11 File Explorer Slow? Here's How to Fix It

You open File Explorer.

You wait 3 seconds for it to appear.

You navigate to a folder — another 2 seconds.

You right-click — the menu takes forever to open.

You might think:

"Is my PC dying? Do I need to upgrade my hardware?"

Probably not.

File Explorer slowness is one of the most common complaints about Windows 11. It's frustrating, it's persistent, and it affects almost everyone at some point.

Microsoft has acknowledged these performance issues and has been working on fixes — including significant improvements released in the optional June 2026 preview update (KB5095093)[reference:9][reference:10]. This update improves File Explorer's startup speed and responsiveness without relying on preloading tricks[reference:11][reference:12]. It also fixes a bug that could cause a system file to consume dozens of gigabytes of storage[reference:13].

The good news? Many File Explorer slowdowns can be fixed without reinstalling Windows.

This guide covers 10 practical ways to fix File Explorer slowness on Windows 11 — from simple settings changes to advanced system repairs.

Why Is File Explorer So Slow on Windows 11?

File Explorer slowness can happen for many reasons:

10 Ways to Fix File Explorer Slow on Windows 11

Fix 1: Restart Windows Explorer

This is the simplest fix — and it often works immediately.

When File Explorer hangs, restarting it can clear temporary issues.

How to do it:

1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
2. Go to the Processes tab
3. Find Windows Explorer (or explorer.exe)
4. Right-click → Restart

What happens: The taskbar, desktop icons, and File Explorer will reload. This often resolves temporary slowdowns.

Pro tip: If File Explorer is completely frozen, you can also restart it from Task Manager → File → Run new task → type explorer.exe → OK.

Fix 2: Change File Explorer to Open "This PC" Instead of "Home"

By default, Windows 11 File Explorer opens to the Home page, which loads recent files, frequent folders, and OneDrive content. Microsoft has confirmed that the Home page is a major source of performance issues[reference:14][reference:15]. Changing this can significantly speed up startup.

How to change it:

1. Open File Explorer
2. Click the View menu (top bar) → Options → Change folder and search options
3. Under the General tab, change Open File Explorer to: from "Home" to "This PC"
4. Click Apply → OK

What you gain: File Explorer opens much faster because it no longer loads cloud files, recent activity, or OneDrive data.

Fix 3: Disable Recent Files and Frequent Folders

Even if you change the startup page, File Explorer still tracks recent files and frequent folders. Disabling these features reduces background activity.

How to disable them:

1. Open File Explorer → View → Options → Change folder and search options
2. Under the General tab, uncheck:
   • Show recently used files in Quick Access
   • Show frequently used folders in Quick Access
   • Show files from Office.com
3. Click Apply → OK

Note: The exact names and locations of these options may vary slightly depending on your Windows 11 version.

What you gain: File Explorer no longer queries your file history or cloud services every time it loads.

Fix 4: Clear File Explorer Cache

File Explorer stores temporary data to speed up frequent operations. Over time, this cache can become bloated and actually slow things down.

How to clear the cache:

1. Open File Explorer
2. Click the View menu → Options → Change folder and search options
3. Go to the General tab
4. Under Privacy, click Clear File Explorer history
5. Click OK

Alternative method (more thorough):

1. Press Win + R, type %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations, press Enter
2. Delete all files in this folder
3. Press Win + R, type %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\CustomDestinations, press Enter
4. Delete all files in this folder
5. Restart File Explorer

What you gain: A fresh start for File Explorer's temporary data.

Fix 5: Test OneDrive Integration (Temporary)

OneDrive is deeply integrated into Windows 11 File Explorer. It constantly checks file status, syncs data, and shows cloud status icons. This can slow down File Explorer — especially if you have large OneDrive folders.

How to test if OneDrive is the cause:

• Temporarily pause OneDrive syncing (right-click OneDrive icon in system tray → Pause syncing)
• Check if File Explorer performance improves

If it helps:

1. Open OneDrive Settings (right-click OneDrive icon in system tray → Settings)
2. Under the Sync and backup tab, turn off Files On-Demand (temporarily)
3. Alternatively, unlink your PC from OneDrive if you don't use it:
   • OneDrive Settings → Account → Unlink this PC

Note: Disabling Files On-Demand changes how OneDrive behaves. Only keep it off if you don't rely on cloud-only files.

What you gain: File Explorer no longer queries OneDrive for file status on every folder navigation.

Fix 6: Disable Startup Programs

Too many programs launching at boot can flood your system with background activity — slowing down File Explorer and everything else.

How to disable startup programs:

1. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc)
2. Go to the Startup tab
3. Sort by Startup Impact
4. Right-click and Disable anything you don't need immediately

Common offenders:

• Spotify
• Discord
• Adobe Creative Cloud
• Steam / Epic Games Launcher
• Zoom / Teams

Pro tip: You can still open these apps manually. They just won't slow down your boot or background performance.

Fix 7: Install the Latest Windows Updates

Microsoft has been actively improving File Explorer performance in recent updates.

In June 2026, Microsoft released an optional preview update (KB5095093) that includes significant File Explorer performance improvements — faster startup, better address bar responsiveness, and improved disk image mounting[reference:16][reference:17]. The update is rolling out in phases, so it may not be available for all users immediately[reference:18][reference:19].

How to check for updates:

1. Open Settings → Windows Update
2. Click Check for updates
3. Install any pending updates
4. Restart your PC

Pro tip: If you're on an older build of Windows 11, consider updating to the latest version. Many File Explorer fixes have been included in recent releases.

Fix 8: Run SFC and DISM

Corrupted system files can cause File Explorer to slow down or become unresponsive.

How to run SFC and DISM:

1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
2. Run:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

1. Wait for completion (10–15 minutes)
2. Run:

sfc /scannow

1. Wait for completion
2. Restart your PC

Pro tip: This fixes many system-wide issues, not just File Explorer problems.

Fix 9: Check for Background Resource Usage

Sometimes File Explorer is slow because other programs are consuming CPU, RAM, or disk resources.

How to check:

1. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc)
2. Go to the Performance tab
3. Check CPU, Memory, and Disk usage
4. If any resource is above 80–90%, go to the Processes tab
5. Sort by the resource that's high (CPU, Memory, or Disk)
6. End Task on any non-essential app that's consuming too much

Important: Be careful not to end system processes or services — only close applications you recognize.

Common culprits:

• Web browsers with many open tabs
• Game launchers downloading updates
• Cloud sync apps
• Windows Update running in the background

Pro tip: If you notice the same app always causing slowness, consider disabling it or adjusting its settings.

Fix 10: Check Your Storage Drive

If your system drive is nearly full, Windows may struggle to perform basic operations, including File Explorer tasks.

How to check:

1. Open File Explorer → right-click C: → Properties
2. Check free space

If you're low on space:

• Run Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr.exe) including system files
• Uninstall unused apps
• Move large files to another drive

Pro tip: Keeping at least 15–20% of your drive free can help maintain system performance.
