How to Check What's Taking Up Space

Windows 11 gives you a general view of System & reserved storage, but it doesn't break it down by component.

Here's how to see the details:

1. Open Settings → System → Storage
2. Click on System & reserved
3. You'll see a list of categories with their sizes:
   • System files
   • Hibernation file
   • Page file
   • Windows Update Cleanup
   • Virtual memory
   • Memory dump files
   • Other files

Now let's go through each component and see what can be safely removed.

Fix 1: Remove Windows Update Cleanup Files

Windows keeps old update files so you can uninstall updates if needed. After your system has been stable for a while, these files are safe to remove.

How to remove them:

1. Press Win + R, type cleanmgr.exe, press Enter
2. Select your C: drive → Click OK
3. Click Clean up system files
4. Select C: again → Wait for the scan
5. Check Windows Update Cleanup
6. Also check:

Fix 2: Delete the Hibernation File (If You Don't Use Hibernate)

The hibernation file (hiberfil.sys) saves the state of your system when you put your PC into Hibernate mode. It's roughly the size of your RAM — so if you have 16 GB of RAM, the hibernation file takes up about 16 GB.

How to check if you have it:

1. Open File Explorer → C: drive
2. Click View → Show → Hidden items
3. Look for hiberfil.sys

If you don't use Hibernate (you use Sleep or Shutdown instead), you can safely disable it:

1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator

How to check or adjust (advanced):

1. Press Win + R, type sysdm.cpl, press Enter
2. Go to the Advanced tab
3. Under Performance, click Settings
4. Go to the Advanced tab
5. Under Virtual memory, click Change
6. You can see the current size and adjust if needed

Recommendation: Unless you're very low on disk space and know what you're doing, leave the page file on automatic management.

Potential space recovered: Usually minimal (1–4 GB), but depends on your system.

Fix 4: Delete Memory Dump Files

When Windows crashes, it creates memory dump files (.dmp) to help diagnose the issue. These files can take up significant space.

How to delete them:

1. Open File Explorer → Navigate to: C:\Windows\Minidump
2. Delete any .dmp files you find
3. Also check: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP (this is a single large file)

Potential space recovered: Varies — can range from a few MB to several GB.

Pro tip: You can change Windows settings to not create dump files at all:

1. Press Win + R, type sysdm.cpl, press Enter
2. Go to Advanced → under Startup and Recovery, click Settings
3. Under Write debugging information, select (None)
4. Click OK

Fix 5: Delete Temporary System Files

Windows creates temporary files during normal operation. These accumulate over time.

How to delete them:

1. Press Win + R, type %temp%, press Enter
2. Delete everything (skip files that are in use)
