The single fastest way to make a Windows 11 PC feel quicker is trimming your startup Apps, and it alone can cut 25 seconds off boot time. But the biggest new win in 2026 is the Low Latency Profile, a silent Windows Update feature that boosts CPU frequency on demand and delivers up to 40% faster app launches without any user action required.

Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 ship with more performance tools than previous releases, yet most users never touch them. TweakTown's 2026 guide calls startup management "the biggest lever most people skip," while Microsoft quietly rolled out a CPU boosting feature this year that independent benchmarks confirm works. Below are the ten tweaks that deliver real results, ordered by impact. Each one works on both builds and requires no third-party software.

Key Takeaways

Startup apps are the single biggest win for boot time. Disabling unnecessary programs shaves roughly 25 seconds off startup on SSDs
The Low Latency Profile, enabled automatically by Windows Update, boosts CPU frequency for 1-3 seconds during interactive tasks and is the headline new feature for 2026
VBS/Memory Integrity carries a 5-15% performance penalty in gaming and general use, though disabling it is harder in Windows 11 24H2 than before
Fast Startup is controversial. It causes issues on NVMe drives and dual-boot setups, and TweakTown recommends disabling it despite the name
Driver updates, especially GPU and chipset, remain one of the most overlooked causes of sluggish performance in 2026

1. Disable Startup Programs

Opening Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and switching to the Startup apps tab is where you start. Alternatively, go to Settings > Apps > Startup. TweakTown rates this as the highest-impact tweak available, and independent testing confirms it: a June 2026 Medium article by ELLA measured a 25-second boot time reduction after trimming the list.

Safe candidates for disabling include Spotify, Teams, Discord, OneDrive on desktops, and Adobe updater. Keep enabled: Windows Defender, audio drivers, and GPU utilities you actively use. Note that some Windows 11 24H2 users report the Startup page may be missing from Settings, but Task Manager remains reliable.

2. Switch Power Plan to Best Performance

Go to Settings > System > Power & battery and select Best Performance from the Power Mode dropdown. Desktop users with administrative access can enable the hidden Ultimate Performance plan by running this command in an elevated PowerShell window:

powercfg -duplicatescheme e9a42b02-d5df-448d-aa00-03f14749eb61

The plan reduces how aggressively hardware powers up and down, trimming micro-delays from aggressive power saving. The tradeoff is real: TweakTown notes that on a laptop the plan mostly heats the chassis and drains the battery for gains you won't feel. Use it on desktops, stick with Balanced on portable machines.

3. Turn Off Game Mode on Non-Gaming PCs

Game Mode lives under Settings > Gaming > Game Mode. It is on by default even if you have never launched a game. The feature holds back background updates and non-game tasks while gaming is detected, which means it subtly throttles your productivity workload by default. ELLA's 2026 analysis found that Windows 11 enables Game Mode automatically regardless of whether you game at all. Turn it off if your machine is used for work only. Leave it on if you play games. The feature does help there.

4. Adjust Visual Effects for Performance

Type "Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows" into the Start menu search. Select "Adjust for best performance" or uncheck individual options manually. The two you should re-enable for usability are "Smooth edges of screen fonts" and "Show thumbnails instead of icons." Computerworld's 2026 guide highlights this tweak as one of 16 practical adjustments, noting that the biggest gains come from disabling animations when minimizing and maximizing windows and turning off taskbar transparency. The impact is largest on older or low-end hardware with integrated graphics.

5. Disable Background App Permissions

Go to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps, click the three-dot menu next to an app, select Advanced options, then set Background App Permissions to Never. This reclaims idle RAM and reduces background CPU usage from apps you open manually. Focus on social media apps, streaming services, and utilities. TweakTown's guide confirms the setting works across all Windows 11 editions and that testing it systematically across rarely used apps produced a measurable reduction in idle memory consumption.

6. Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS)

Located under Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Change default GPU settings, this toggle moves frame preparation from CPU to GPU. The benefit is not universal: Digitnaut benchmarked the feature in May 2026 and found an average FPS change of roughly -2% to +3% across modern hardware. Some games stutter with it enabled; laptops tend to last longer on battery with it off. DLSS frame generation requires HAGS enabled. Leave it on if you game on a desktop with a capable GPU. Turn it off on laptops or if you experience stuttering in specific titles.

7. Enable Storage Sense

Navigate to Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense, or run ms-settings:storagepolicies in the Run dialog. The feature automatically deletes temporary files, empties the recycle bin, and removes offline OneDrive content based on a schedule you set.

8. Update Drivers Manually

Windows Update does not always serve the latest drivers. For NVIDIA GPUs, use GeForce Experience or visit nvidia.com/drivers directly. AMD users should use AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition or amd.com/support. Intel Arc owners can use the Intel Driver & Support Assistant. Chipset and NVMe drivers come from your motherboard manufacturer's website. ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, and ASRock all publish them. ELLA's article identifies outdated drivers as "one of the most common and most overlooked causes of sluggish Windows 11 performance in 2026." The caveat from TweakTown applies here too: if everything works, leave it alone. Replacing a working driver "is one of the more common ways people create a problem that didn't exist that morning."

9. Virtualization-Based Security (VBS) and Memory Integrity

Memory Integrity sits under Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation details. It uses CPU virtualization to isolate the Windows kernel from malicious drivers. The performance cost is real: Reddit discussions from late 2025 cite 3DMark benchmarks showing a 14% average frame rate drop with VBS enabled. Facebook communities report 2-10% gains in gaming when disabled. The complication is that Windows 11 24H2 made VBS harder to disable through the normal UI. Microsoft Learn states that Memory Integrity works best with Intel Kaby Lake and higher or AMD Zen 2 and higher processors. Disabling it removes a layer of kernel protection. The decision depends on your threat model. Gamers on 24H2 who accept the risk see a measurable boost.

10. Fast Startup

Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do > Change settings that are currently unavailable. Uncheck "Turn on fast startup." Despite the name, Fast Startup does not perform a full shutdown. It signs you out and saves the kernel and driver state to the hibernation file. TweakTown recommends disabling it on nearly every PC. On NVMe SSDs the boot time savings are measured in seconds, while the half-state shutdown introduces problems: UEFI firmware becomes harder to reach at boot, driver issues persist across reboots, and dual-boot Linux systems may refuse to mount the Windows partition or mount it read-only to avoid corruption. Computerworld includes Fast Startup in its 16 ways to speed up Windows 11, but presents it as a tradeoff rather than a clear win. A regular restart always performs a full cold boot anyway, which clears accumulated driver state.

Bonus: Low Latency Profile

This is the standout new feature for 2026. The Low Latency Profile temporarily boosts CPU clock speeds for 1-3 seconds during interactive tasks such as app launches and shell flyouts. It is enabled automatically via Windows Update. No toggle exists, and no user action is required. The August 2026 update (KB5094126 or later) extended the CPU boost from shell interactions to general app launches. Windows Latest reported in May 2026 that Microsoft claims up to 40% faster app launch times and up to 70% faster interaction times. Independent Reddit testers confirmed the effect in August 2026, observing that apps launched noticeably faster after the update rolled out. The improvements vary by hardware. Older or lower-powered machines see less dramatic gains.

Conclusion

The highest-impact changes are disabling startup programs and letting the Low Latency Profile run automatically. The rest are situational: VBS and Fast Startup involve tradeoffs between performance and security or stability, while HAGS and power plans matter most on specific hardware configurations. Driver updates remain essential regardless of which tweaks you apply. Try the startup trim first. It takes two minutes and affects every boot.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Is the Low Latency Profile safe to use?

It temporarily increases CPU frequency during short interactive bursts, then returns to normal. There is no risk of hardware damage from brief boosts within manufacturer specifications.

Q: Should I disable VBS to gain performance?

It depends on your threat model. VBS with Memory Integrity protects the kernel from malicious drivers and carries a 5-15% performance penalty according to benchmarks. Disabling it improves gaming and general responsiveness but removes that protection layer. If you only visit trusted sites and run verified software, the risk is lower. If you download drivers or software from unknown sources, keeping it enabled is safer.

Q: Why does TweakTown recommend disabling Fast Startup while Computerworld lists it as a speed feature?

Fast Startup reduces boot time by saving kernel state to disk, but it does not perform a true shutdown. This causes problems on NVMe drives (minimal benefit), dual-boot setups (Linux may refuse to mount Windows), and long-term stability (driver issues accumulate). TweakTown prioritizes stability; Computerworld prioritizes raw boot speed. The right choice depends on whether you dual-boot or value a clean boot state over a few seconds at startup.

Q: Does Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling help all games?

No. Digitnaut's 2026 benchmarks showed mixed results: some games gain a few FPS, others stutter, and the average across titles is roughly flat. DLSS frame generation requires HAGS enabled, so turn it on if you use DLSS. Otherwise test it per game and leave it off if you notice stuttering.

Q: What is the single most effective tweak for slowing PCs?

Too many startup programs. Multiple sources including TweakTown and independent testers agree this is the biggest lever most users ignore. Disabling unnecessary startup apps is the fastest way to improve boot time and early-session responsiveness, and it takes approximately two minutes.
