Broken Down on Highway at Night: Safety Tips and What to Do Right Now: Explained

> **Quick Answer:** Get as far off the road as possible, turn on your hazard lights immediately, and stay in your car with your seatbelt on if you cannot get fully clear of traffic. Call 911 or a tow service, then use flares or reflective triangles behind the car. Never stand between your car and moving traffic, and never accept a ride from a stranger who stops unsolicited.

## What Do I Do the Second My Car Breaks Down on the Highway at Night?

Move right. That is your only job in the first five seconds. Steer toward the right shoulder while you still have momentum, even if you hear grinding or feel the car pulling. A damaged car on the shoulder beats a stopped car in the travel lane every time.

Once you stop, hit your hazard lights before you do anything else. Do not wait. Then:

1. Pull as far onto the shoulder as you physically can. Get all four tires off the travel lane.
2. Put the car in park and set the parking brake.
3. If the shoulder is narrow or you are on a bridge or overpass, call 911 immediately. Do not try to walk away from that situation on your own.
4. Keep your seatbelt on while you are still inside the car.

If you have a reflective safety vest in your trunk, this is the moment to put it on before you open any door.

## Is It Safer to Stay in My Car or Get Out?

Stay in the car on most highways unless the car is on fire or you smell fuel strongly. A stationary car on the shoulder gets struck by inattentive drivers more often than people realize, especially at night when depth perception is compromised. Being inside the car gives you a steel cage around you. If a car does drift onto the shoulder, you have a better chance inside than standing next to the vehicle.

The one exception: if your car is smoking heavily or you smell burning, get out and move away from the car on the far side of the guardrail if one is present. Put distance between yourself and the vehicle. See [car smoking under hood on side of road: what to do right now](/car-smoking-under-hood-on-side-of-road-what-to-do/) for how to handle that specific situation.

If you do exit the car, exit from the passenger side and stay as far from the travel lanes as possible. Do not stand at the rear of the car.

## How Do I Signal Other Drivers and Make Myself Visible at Night?

Your hazard lights are step one, but they are not enough on a fast highway at night. Use every warning device you have.

Reflective triangles: place one about 10 feet behind the car, one about 100 feet back, and one about 300 feet back. These give approaching drivers three visual cues with enough distance to react. Road flares are more visible at distance but require you to spend more time exposed near traffic. For a full comparison of which is safer in different situations, read [emergency triangle vs flares: which is safer on the highway](/emergency-triangle-vs-flares-which-is-safer-on-highway/).

Additional visibility steps:

- Turn on your interior dome light. It is a surprisingly effective visual marker at night.
- If you have a flashlight, leave it on top of your car or hold it steady, not flashing around. A steady light is easier for drivers to process than a waving one.
- White or bright clothing reflects headlights far better than dark colors.

Do not rely on other drivers to see you. Assume they cannot, and set up your warning signals accordingly.

## Who Do I Call First, and What Do I Say?

Call 911 if you are in a lane of traffic, on a bridge, in a tunnel, on a curve where visibility is poor, or if anyone is injured. Dispatchers can send highway patrol to block traffic while you wait.

If you are safely on the shoulder, your next call is your roadside assistance provider. AAA, your insuran

ce company's roadside line, or a direct tow company all work. When you call, give them:

- The highway number and direction you were traveling (e.g., "southbound I-40")
- The last mile marker or exit sign you passed
- Your exact problem (won't start, flat tire, overheating)
- Your phone number in case you lose signal

If you are not sure who to call and do not have a membership, read [car died on interstate: who do I call first](/car-died-on-interstate-who-do-i-call-first/) for a clear decision tree.

Your state's 511 service can also connect you with highway information and, in some states, dispatch assistance directly.

## What If Someone Stops to Help: Is It Safe to Interact with Them?

Roll your window down a few inches and speak through the glass. Thank them, tell them help is already on the way, and ask them to call 911 if they want to help further. You do not need to accept a ride from a stranger, and you should not get into an unknown vehicle at night.

If someone stops and becomes aggressive or tries to get you to unlock the car, call 911 immediately and describe the vehicle.

Highway patrol officers and marked tow trucks contracted by the state are different. If a uniformed officer stops, you can verify by leaving the window cracked and asking them to show their badge or calling 911 to confirm a unit is at your location. This is not paranoid. It is a standard precaution recommended by state highway patrols.

## Common Questions

**Q: Should I leave my car on the highway or try to drive it damaged to an exit?**
A: If the car can move safely at low speed without risk of losing steering or braking, driving slowly to the next exit is reasonable. If you have a blown tire, seized engine, or brake failure, do not try to drive it. [Brake failure on the highway](/brake-failure-on-highway-what-to-do/) and a [seized engine](/car-engine-seized-up-on-highway-what-to-do/) both require you to stop immediately and call for a tow.

**Q: What if my phone is dead and I can't call anyone?**
A: Stay in the car with hazards on and wait for highway patrol. On most interstate highways, patrol intervals are regular enough that you will be spotted within 30 to 60 minutes. If you decide to walk, go to the nearest emergency call box, which are posted at regular intervals on most interstates, typically every mile. Walk on the shoulder facing traffic, as far from the travel lanes as possible.

**Q: How long will it take for a tow truck to reach me on the highway at night?**
A: Response times vary widely. In urban areas, expect 30 to 60 minutes. On rural interstates at 2 a.m., it can be 90 minutes or longer. Give the dispatcher your exact location and mile marker. Stay on the phone with them if you feel unsafe.

**Q: Is it legal to walk on the highway shoulder at night?**
A: It is generally legal on the shoulder in most states, but it is genuinely dangerous. Drivers drifting toward the shoulder at highway speed with limited visibility at night is a real hazard. Walk only if your car is in an unsafe position and you need to reach a call box or emergency exit. Never walk in a travel lane.

**Q: What should I keep in my car for exactly this situation?**
A: At minimum: a reflective triangle set, a flashlight with fresh batteries, a phone charger or battery pack, a reflective safety vest, and your roadside assistance information saved in your phone contacts. A basic first aid kit and a blanket round it out. These items fit in a small bag in your trunk and cover most highway breakdown situations.
