> **Quick Answer:** A dead fuel pump on the highway means the car must be towed. Expect $75 to $150 for a local tow of 5 to 10 miles, or $200 to $400+ if you're far from a shop. The fuel pump itself costs $150 to $600 for parts, plus $100 to $200 in labor. Total repair bill typically lands between $300 and $900 depending on your vehicle and where you take it.
## What Exactly Happens When a Fuel Pump Dies at Highway Speed?
The engine cuts out because it stops receiving fuel. You may notice the engine sputtering, a sudden loss of power, or the car acting like it ran out of gas even though the tank is not empty. The check engine light may come on, and the engine will not restart no matter how many times you crank it. A failed fuel pump is a hard stop. There is no driving it to a shop.
The fuel pump sits inside the gas tank on most modern vehicles. When it fails, no fuel reaches the fuel rail, injectors, or combustion chamber. The engine is not seized or damaged from a pump failure alone, but the car is completely immobile. You need a tow.
## How Do I Stay Safe After a Fuel Pump Failure on the Highway?
Get off the roadway. If you feel the engine losing power, immediately signal and coast to the right shoulder as far from traffic as possible. Do not stop in a travel lane or on a narrow shoulder with no room between you and passing vehicles.
Once stopped, turn on your hazard lights. If you have road flares or reflective triangles, place them 50 to 100 feet behind the vehicle to give traffic warning. Stay inside the car with your seatbelt on if the shoulder is narrow. If you're on a wide shoulder or can get behind a guardrail, that's safer. Call 911 if you're in a dangerous position, then call for a tow.

## How Much Will the Tow Cost After a Fuel Pump Failure?
Most tow companies charge a $50 to $75 hook-up fee plus $3 to $7 per mile. A 10-mile tow lands around $100 to $140. If you broke down on a rural stretch of interstate 30 miles from the nearest shop, that tow can easily hit $150 to $250 or more. Flatbed towing, which most shops prefer for fuel-delivery failures since the car cannot be driven or rolled in neutral safely, may cost slightly more.
If you have AAA, your policy tier determines how many free tow miles you get. Basic AAA covers 5 miles. Plus covers 100 miles. Premier covers 200 miles. USAA roadside assistance and some other insurance add-ons cover towing too. Check before you pay out of pocket. ## How Much Does Fixing a Fuel Pump Cost After the Tow?
Parts run $150 to $600 depending on the make and model. A pump for a common vehicle like a 2015 Ford F-150 or Honda Accord sits at the lower end. A pump for a European model or a truck with a dual-tank setup can push past $400 for parts alone. Labor typically runs $100 to $200 becaus

e most fuel pumps require dropping the gas tank to access.
Total repair cost at an independent shop: $300 to $700 for most domestic vehicles. At a dealership, budget $600 to $900. If you're on a road trip and have to use a shop in an unfamiliar city, get a written estimate before they start. Most states require this by law. ## Can I Diagnose a Bad Fuel Pump Before I'm Stranded?
Often, yes. A failing pump gives warnings before it quits completely. Common signs include the engine stuttering under hard acceleration, long crank times before starting, loss of power when climbing a grade, and a whining or buzzing sound from the rear of the car near the gas tank. That buzzing comes from the pump motor straining to maintain pressure.
If your car is showing any of those symptoms, do not wait. A fuel pressure test at any auto parts store or shop will tell you if the pump is weak. Fuel pressure below spec for your engine, typically 40 to 60 psi on fuel-injected gas engines, confirms the pump is failing. Replace it before it leaves you on the highway. It will not heal itself.

## Common Questions
**Q: Can a bad fuel pump cause my car to stall and restart repeatedly before fully dying?**
A: Yes. A failing pump can overheat, cut out, and temporarily restore function once it cools. If your car stalls and then starts again 10 to 20 minutes later, a weak fuel pump is one of the top suspects alongside a crankshaft position sensor.
**Q: Will my insurance cover the tow if my fuel pump dies on the highway?**
A: Only if you have roadside assistance coverage added to your policy. Standard liability or collision coverage does not pay for mechanical breakdown tows. Check your policy's declarations page or app before assuming you're covered.
**Q: Is it safe to leave my car on the highway shoulder while I wait for the tow?**
A: Stay in the car with hazard lights on if the shoulder is narrow. Set out warning triangles or flares if you can do so safely. Call 911 if your position is genuinely dangerous. Most tow trucks arrive within 30 to 60 minutes in metro areas.
**Q: Can a fuel pump failure damage the engine?**
A: Not directly. The engine simply stops running without fuel. However, if the pump failure causes the engine to stall at highway speed and you panic and brake hard, you could create a secondary hazard. The pump itself does not cause engine damage.
**Q: What's the fastest way to get a tow when my fuel pump dies on the highway?**
A: Call your roadside assistance provider first (AAA, your insurance's roadside line, or your automaker's roadside number if your car is under warranty). If you have none of those, search "tow truck near me" and call directly. Dispatchers need your exact location, so use your GPS or note the nearest mile marker or exit number.
