Car Power Steering Failed on Highway: Emergency Protocol: What To Do Next

> **Quick Answer:** Don't panic. Keep both hands firmly on the wheel. The car still steers, it just takes much more effort. Ease off the gas gradually, signal, and work your way to the right shoulder lane by lane. Do not yank the wheel. Once safely stopped, turn on hazards, call for a tow, and do not attempt to drive further. Power steering failure at highway speed is manageable if you stay controlled.

## What Do I Do the Instant Power Steering Fails at Highway Speed?

Keep both hands on the wheel and do not brake suddenly. The steering still works, but you are now moving the front wheels through mechanical linkage alone, which takes real physical effort, especially above 50 mph.

Here is the sequence:

1. Grip the wheel firmly with both hands.
2. Take your foot off the gas and let the car slow naturally. Do not slam the brakes.
3. Check mirrors and signal right.
4. Steer toward the right shoulder gradually, one lane at a time. Each movement requires more force than you are used to. Use your arms, not just your wrists.
5. As speed drops below 30 mph, steering becomes noticeably heavier. Be ready for that.
6. Get fully off the roadway, onto the shoulder or an exit ramp if one is immediately ahead.
7. Hazard lights on the moment you start moving toward the shoulder, not after you stop.

The single biggest mistake drivers make is jerking the wheel. At 65 mph, even a small overcorrection can cause a spin. Slow inputs, firm grip.

## Why Did My Power Steering Suddenly Fail While Driving?

The most common cause on the highway is a broken or slipped serpentine belt. That one belt drives the power steering pump on most vehicles with hydraulic systems. When the serpentine belt snaps, the pump stops instantly and steering goes heavy all at once. You may also hear a squeal right before it goes.

Other causes:

- **Power steering fluid leak:** A slow leak drains the reservoir. You get increasing stiffness before total failure.
- **Failed power steering pump:** The pump seizes or loses pressure. Often preceded by a whining or groaning noise when turning.
- **Electric power steering (EPS) failure:** On newer vehicles, EPS is motor-driven. A failed EPS module, blown fuse, or overheated motor cuts assist completely. No fluid involved.
- **Rack and pinion failure:** Less sudden, but a cracked rack or broken tie rod can cause abrupt loss of control, not just heaviness.

If you lost steering and also heard a loud snap or your engine temperature spiked simultaneously, a serpentine belt failure is the most likely culprit. [A snapped serpentine belt also kills your alternator and cooling fan](https://towwiththeflow.com/serpentine-belt-snapped-on-highway-tow-or-wait/), so check your temperature gauge once you are safely stopped.

## Is It Safe to Drive to a Shop After Power Steering Fails?

No. Do not drive the car. Highway driving without power assist is dangerous, and low-speed maneuvering into a parking lot or shop driveway requires serious physical effort and precise control most drivers are not prepared for under stress. Parking lots mean tight turns, which are exactly where unpowered steering fights you hardest.

Beyond the safety issue: if the failure was caused by a serpentine belt, driving the car without that belt running means no alternator charging and potentially no cooling fan. You can seize the

engine within a few miles. [A seized engine is a far more expensive problem than a tow](https://towwiththeflow.com/car-engine-seized-up-on-highway-what-to-do/).

Call a tow truck from the shoulder. This is not a drive-it-in situation.

## How Do I Stay Safe on the Shoulder While I Wait for a Tow?

Get as far right as possible, ideally past the white fog line and onto the paved shoulder. If there is a guard rail with a few feet of clearance, use it. The further from active traffic lanes, the better.

Once stopped:

- Hazard lights stay on, even in daylight.
- If you have emergency triangles or flares, place them 100 to 200 feet behind the vehicle. On a high-speed interstate, further is better.
- Exit through the passenger-side door if at all possible. Never stand on the traffic side of the car.
- Move away from the vehicle toward the guard rail or up an embankment. Do not stand directly behind the car.
- Call 911 first if you are in an unsafe location, then call a tow. On most interstates, 511 gives you access to your state's traffic management center, and highway patrol patrols the shoulder regularly.

## Common Questions

**Q: Can I still steer the car at all with no power steering?**
A: Yes. The mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels still exists. You can steer, but it takes noticeably more force, especially at low speeds and during sharp turns. Think parallel parking with no power assist. It is hard but possible.

**Q: Will power steering failure cause me to lose complete control of the car?**
A: Not if you stay calm and keep both hands on the wheel. You will not be thrown into the barrier. The car gets harder to steer, not unsteerable. The risk comes from overcorrecting in a panic, not from the failure itself.

**Q: How much does it cost to repair a power steering failure?**
A: A serpentine belt replacement runs roughly $75 to $200 parts and labor. A power steering pump is typically $200 to $600 installed. A full rack and pinion replacement can reach $1,000 to $2,000 depending on the vehicle. A blown EPS fuse is a few dollars, while an EPS module is several hundred.

**Q: Will my insurance cover the tow after a power steering breakdown?**
A: Only if you carry roadside assistance or comprehensive coverage with towing included. Standard liability does not cover mechanical breakdown tows. Check your policy before you assume you are covered. [GEICO, State Farm, and USAA all handle breakdown towing differently](https://towwiththeflow.com/does-geico-cover-towing-after-breakdown/).

**Q: My steering felt stiff for a few days before it failed completely. Was that a warning sign?**
A: Yes. Progressive stiffness almost always means low or leaking power steering fluid, or a pump that is wearing out. If you had caught it at the stiff-but-working stage, you likely would have avoided a highway emergency entirely. Any change in steering feel is worth diagnosing immediately.
