Quick Answer: Losing power steering does not lock your steering. The wheel gets very heavy, especially at low speeds, but you can still steer with both hands and real effort. Driving a short, slow, low-traffic route home is sometimes possible. On highways, in traffic, or with a groaning pump or fluid leak, call a tow. A burst hose or seizing pump can make it worse.
Can I Still Steer My Car After Power Steering Fails?
Yes. The steering is mechanical, and the power assist just makes turning easy. When assist quits, the steering rack and column still connect your wheel to the tires.
Expect to use both hands and muscle. It is hardest at parking-lot speeds and easiest at highway speed, where the tires turn more readily. Tight turns, U-turns, and parking are where people get in trouble.
Do this right away:
- Grip the wheel with both hands. Don't let go to reach for your phone.
- Turn on your hazards and ease off the gas.
- Brake gently. If your brakes feel stiff too, your engine may have died. Don't pump them hard, just press firmly.
- Pick a wide, easy exit or shoulder. Plan your turn early because you'll need more room and more effort.
Is It Safe to Drive Home With No Power Steering?
It's safe only if the distance is short, the route is simple, and the cause isn't getting worse. Otherwise, tow it.
Driving is reasonable if all of these are true:
- Home is a few miles away on low-speed roads with wide, gentle turns.
- You can turn the wheel with both hands without fighting it.
- No red battery light, no overheating, no burning smell.
- You're physically comfortable handling a heavy wheel. If you're small, injured, or have limited grip strength, don't risk it.
Tow it if any of these apply:
- You're on a freeway or in dense traffic where a sudden swerve could be needed.
- The route has sharp turns, a steep hill, or a tight driveway or garage.
- You hear a loud whine or groan, or see fluid under the car.
- The steering felt loose, shuddered, or wandered before it went heavy.
- The battery light is on. Many cars drive the belt for the steering pump and the alternator together.
Your reaction time in an emergency is worse with a heavy wheel. Taking one bad corner too wide is how a small repair becomes a collision.
Why Did My Power Steering Suddenly Stop Working?
The most common cause is a broken or slipped serpentine belt, followed by low fluid from a leak. Which one you have changes what you should do.
Hydraulic systems (most cars before roughly 2010, and many trucks still):
- Broken serpentine belt. The belt spins the pump, so when it snaps the assist dies. A broken belt often takes out the alternator and sometimes the water pump drive too. If the battery light came on or the temperature gauge is climbing, stop. Driving on a dead belt can overheat the engine. See alternator died while driving for the warning signs.
- Leaking hose or low fluid. A burst high-pressure line dumps fluid fast. Look for a reddish or amber puddle near the front. A pump running dry whines and can seize.
Electric systems (EPS, common on newer Hondas, Toyotas, Fords, and most modern cars):
- No fluid or belt to check. A failure usually shows a steering wheel or "EPS" warning light. Causes include a failed motor, a sensor fault, or low voltage. A tired battery or failing alternator can trigger it. Sometimes shutting the car off and restarting restores assist temporarily. Don't count on it l

What Should I Check Before Deciding?
Pull over somewhere flat and safe, shut the engine off, and look. It takes two minutes and tells you whether driving is an option.
- Open the hood and look at the serpentine belt. A snapped or missing belt means no driving. Stop and call for a tow.
- Check the power steering reservoir. It's a small tank, often marked with a steering wheel icon. Low or empty fluid with a visible leak means a tow. Topping off with the correct fluid may get you a short distance only if the leak is slow, and it will keep leaking.
- Look under the car for fluid puddles near the front.
- Check dash lights. Battery, temperature, or EPS lights change the answer fast.
One real tip: if the fluid is low and you have the correct type in your trunk, add it and test the wheel in a parking lot before you commit to the road. If assist comes back and holds, drive straight home on quiet roads and get the leak fixed immediately.
If the car has any smoke or overheating, read smoke coming from under the hood before restarting.
How Much Does It Cost to Fix or Tow?
A tow is cheaper than the damage you can cause driving a failing system. Costs vary by region and vehicle.
- Serpentine belt: often a low-cost repair, since the part is cheap and labor is short.
- Power steering hose: moderate, depending on which line and how hard it is to reach.
- Pump or steering rack replacement: the expensive end. Rack replacements are a major repair on most cars.
- EPS motor or sensor: varies widely and sometimes requires dealer diagnostics.
For towing, a flatbed is the right call here, since you don't want the front wheels turning on a dragged car. Prices depend on your city and distance. For examples, see how much a tow truck costs in Dallas or towing in Houston per mile. If you have no coverage, ask for the full price before dispatch.

Common Questions
Q: Will my steering lock up if the power steering fails?
A: No. Steering stays connected mechanically. It gets very heavy, but you can still turn the wheel with both hands. A locked steering wheel is a different problem, usually the ignition lock engaging.
Q: Can I drive on the highway with no power steering?
A: It's not worth the risk. Highway speed makes the wheel lighter, but you lose the quick correction you'd need if something goes wrong. Exit as soon as you can and get towed.
Q: Is it safe to just add power steering fluid and keep driving?
A: Only as a short-term test, and only if you have the correct fluid for your car. If it leaks out again within minutes, the hose or pump is failing and you should stop driving.
Q: Why did my steering go heavy and then come back?
A: That points to a slipping belt, low fluid, or a dying pump or EPS system. It will fail again, possibly at a worse moment. Get it diagnosed soon.
Q: Is it the battery or the power steering?
A: On electric systems, a weak battery or alternator can cut steering assist. If other lights flickered or the car stumbled, check the battery first. See battery light came on while driving.
