Free pet care record checklist and monthly pet cost worksheet
Record-keeping guidance only. Follow your vet's advice for your pet's health.
What to keep in one place
Name, species and breed, birthday or adoption date, weight, microchip number, vet and emergency vet phone numbers, poison control phone, allergies and conditions, food brand and amount, insurance policy number.
Vet visits and vaccines
Write the date, reason, vet, cost and follow-up for every visit. For vaccines and preventives (for example rabies, distemper, flea and tick, heartworm, dental cleaning) write the date given and the next due date, so nothing lapses. Ask your vet what your pet needs.
Medication log
For each medicine write dose, how often, start and end date. Tick it off when given, especially if two people share the job.
Routine checks
Brush coat, trim nails, clean ears, brush teeth, wash bedding, weigh monthly. A change in weight or appetite is worth noting for your vet.
What your pet really costs
Add up a year of food, vet, supplies, grooming, boarding and insurance. Divide by 12. Many owners find the real number is higher than they guessed.
6 ways to cut pet costs
Keep up routine care to avoid bigger bills. Compare food prices by cost per day, not per bag. Learn basic grooming. Ask about wellness plans. Set aside a monthly emergency fund ($20 to $50). Compare insurance quotes while your pet is young and healthy.
