As a developer, I like projects that answer one clear question. "How big will my puppy get?" is exactly that kind of question. New puppy owners ask it constantly, and most of the answers they find online are either forum guesses or giant breed-chart images that are hard to read on a phone.
So I built a small calculator: enter the puppy's current age and weight, pick a size category, and it estimates the adult weight. The whole thing runs in the browser with plain JavaScript. No backend, no database, no frameworks.
The core logic is deliberately simple. Puppies grow fastest in their first months, then the growth curve flattens as they approach maturity. Small breeds generally mature earlier than large breeds, so the calculator uses a growth multiplier that depends on the puppy's current age and expected size range, then projects the adult weight from the current weight.
Is it exact? No, and the page says so plainly. Genetics, diet, and individual variation all play a role. What the tool does is turn a vague worry into a reasonable estimate in about ten seconds. That framing matters more than the math: the interface leads with the answer, then explains the assumptions underneath. If a tool can't show its working, people shouldn't trust it.
Building it taught me a few things worth sharing:
Answer the question first, explain second. The result updates immediately as inputs change. The explanation of how the estimate works sits below, for people who want it. Most visitors never scroll down, and that's fine. The tool did its job.
Constrain inputs instead of validating errors. Rather than letting someone type an impossible number into a weight field and then showing an error, the inputs use sensible minimums, maximums, and steppers. Fewer error states means less code and a calmer experience.
Keep the bundle tiny. The entire calculator is a single page with inline JavaScript. There is no build step and no tracking scripts. It loads fast on a mid-range phone over a weak connection, which is exactly how many people will find it: standing in a pet store or at the breeder's, wondering about the puppy in front of them.
Write the copy like a person. New dog owners are often anxious. The text avoids jargon, doesn't pretend to be a medical authority, and explains the reasoning behind the estimate so curious readers can follow along.
One detail I'm proud of: the result also shows a simple growth timeline with rough expectations for the coming months, because "adult weight" alone isn't the most useful number for someone with an eight-week-old puppy. The near-term milestones are what actually help with planning: crate size, food amounts, and when the big growth spurts happen.
If you're curious, you can try the puppy size calculator and see how it responds to your inputs. And if you build small single-purpose tools yourself, I'd love to hear what question yours answers. The best ones always start from something a real person asked out loud.
