Free chore ideas by age and allowance system for kids
Suggestions only. Pick what fits your family and your child's age.
Chore ideas by age
Ages 3 to 5: put toys away, feed the pet with help, put dirty clothes in the hamper, set napkins on the table, water plants, make the bed in a simple way.
Ages 6 to 9: set and clear the table, pack the school bag, tidy the bedroom, take out small trash, help fold laundry, walk or feed the pet.
Ages 10 to 13: load and unload the dishwasher, vacuum a room, wash dishes, help cook a meal, mow or rake, do their own laundry.
Ages 14 and up: cook a family meal weekly, clean the bathroom, wash the car, help with the grocery list, yard work, short babysitting of siblings.
A simple allowance system
A common rule of thumb is about $1 per week per year of age, or a fixed amount tied to a few daily jobs. Split every payment three ways: Save, Spend, Give. Write each payment in a ledger so your child sees the balance grow.
Tips that help
Do the first few weeks together. Keep the chart where your child sees it. Choose 3 to 5 chores, not 15. Praise effort, not just results. Let your child pick a savings goal so waiting has a point.
