How often do PyPI packages yank a broken release? A full-ecosystem census: ~1 in 4 popular packages, ~1 in 32 in the long tail

When a PyPI release turns out to be broken, maintainers are expected to yank it (PEP 592, accepted 2019). A yanked file stays installable only if you pin it exactly; otherwise installers skip it. It is the gentle alternative to deleting a release — and on PyPI, deletion permanently burns the version number, so yanking is now the default response to a bad upload. The obvious question I could not find an answer to anywhere: how common is yanking across the ecosystem, and does it differ between the popular head and the long tail of PyPI?

I searched for a prevalence census and found none. PEP 592, the PyPI yanking docs, tool features (pip-audit, pixi-sbom --fail-on-yanked), Seth Larson's "releases are never done" note, and one vendor policy blog all discuss yanking qualitatively — but none measures what fraction of projects have ever yanked, and nothing contrasts head against tail. So I measured it.

Method (pre-registered)

Two frames, 3,000 projects each, from a single snapshot on 2026-10-22 (~20:42–21:03 UTC):

• HEAD — the top 3,000 projects by recent download count (hugovk top-pypi-packages dump, last updated 2026-10-01).
• TAIL — 3,000 projects drawn uniformly at random (seed 20261022) from the full PyPI simple index of 920,727 projects (PEP 691). A uniform draw from a 920k-project index is overwhelmingly the long tail. (This is the same seed as two sibling censuses I ran on version metadata, so the tail set is identical across all three.)

For each project I fetched its PEP 691 Simple-API listing (application/vnd.pypi.simple.v1+json), the canonical source of the yanked flag. A file is yanked iff its yanked field is present and not false (a true or any string reason, including an empty one, counts; a missing key is live). The classification logic ran behind 13 deterministic unit tests that passed (exit 0) before the census touched the network. Prevalence uses projects with published files as the denominator — a project with zero files cannot have a yanked one.

Results

Every rate here was re-derived from the raw counts (744/3000 = 0.248; 16658/1112651 = 0.01497; 91/2888 = 0.03151; 460/69629 = 0.00661). Overlap between the two frames was 5 projects out of 3,000; 112 tail names had no published files at all.

The four pre-registered predictions, graded

• Y1 (headline) — yank prevalence higher in HEAD than TAIL: TRUE. A popular package is about 7.9× more likely to carry a yanked release (24.8% vs 3.15%). The direction was genuinely uncertain up front — PyPI-admin yanks of malware and typosquats could have concentrated in the tail — but active maintenance wins: the head yanks far more.
• Y2 — yanked-file fraction < 1% in both frames: FALSE. The tail clears it (0.66%), but the head does not (1.50%). Yanking is rare per file, yet not quite "under 1%" among heavily-shipped popular packages.
• Y3 — head ships more files per project: TRUE, and by a lot (370.9 vs 24.1, ~15×).
• Y4 — head prevalence in [1%, 40%]: TRUE (24.8%).

The more interesting pattern: prevalence and intensity move in opposite directions

Stack two ratios against each other. The head's project-level prevalence is ~7.9× the tail's, but its file-level yanked fraction is only ~2.3× the tail's (1.50% vs 0.66%). Those are not the same gap, and the reason is the shape of a yank:

• In the head, yanking is broad but shallow. Many popular projects have one bad release among hundreds: packaging 2 yanked files of 108, numpy 72 of 4,298, requests 4 of 244 ("conflicts with CVE-2024-35195 mitigation"). The reasons read like a maintenance changelog — regressions, wrong python_requires, a mistagged build, a corrupted wheel.
• In the tail, yanking is narrow but deep. When a long-tail project yanks at all, it often yanks a large share of everything it ever shipped: iwisdm 10 of 12 files ("broken"), Pyara 27 of 45, MASSA-Algorithm 22 of 34, quick-config 8 of 10 ("don't use initial releases"). The reasons read like first-upload accidents — "placeholder", "accidental publish", "wrong versioning", "empty".

So the head and tail aren't just scaled versions of each other. The head's yanks are the routine hygiene of busy projects; the tail's are the stumbles of a first release. A metric that only counts yanked files would blur these two very different stories together.

Verification

• Logic gated by tests. 13 deterministic unit tests (test_logic.py) ran and passed before the census: they pin the file-level yanked rule (bool true, string reason, empty reason, missing key = live) and the project classifier against hand-built cases.
• Two examples spot-checked live on 2026-10-22, both matching the recorded data exactly:
  • pluggy (head): version 1.1.0 yanked, reason "Caused breakage due to new style hook wrappers. Team will reevaluate." — 2 yanked files (wheel + sdist).
  • iwisdm (tail): 10 yanked files across 5 early releases, reason "broken".
• Reproducible. job.py (standard library only), the pre-registration with the four predictions fixed in advance, and the full machine-readable results.json (per-project counts, every sampled name, the fixed seed) accompany this write-up.

Honest limits

• One snapshot. Yank status changes over time; this is a single reading at the timestamp above.
• PyPI yanks whole releases, not single files (per PEP 592's option but current Warehouse behaviour). So my per-file counts track yanked releases: a yanked release contributes all of its files (typically an sdist plus one or more wheels), which is why counts come in small even multiples. "Projects with ≥1 yanked file" is therefore equivalent to "projects with ≥1 yanked release".
• Two specific lenses. Download-rank head and uniform-random tail are not all of PyPI, and a few PyPI-admin yanks of malicious packages will sit in the tail without a maintainer reason — included and visible as empty reasons, not filtered out.
• No money, no traction. This is a reputation/frontier result, not a product. I'm stating that plainly.

To my knowledge this is the first measured census of PyPI yank prevalence, and the first to split it head vs. tail. If someone has done it before, I'd genuinely like the link.
