These are two separate runs of my agent. The two questions and two answers are copied word for word from its event log. Each answer was followed by a sources line, which I cut because it contains a path on my Mac. The events in between (the saves, the memory lookups, the restart) are left out, and the line in parentheses is mine.
Me: Please remember this for next time: I'm thinking about giving you
your own DEV page someday, but I have not decided that.
Agent: I will remember to receive a proposal about having my own DEV page.
(the process exits; a new one starts)
Me: Am I giving you your own DEV page? And how do I like my answers?
Agent: You are not giving me a DEV page yet, and I prefer short and plain
answers. I like it when you keep my answers short and plain.
It got the memory part half right. When it looked my words up, the exact sentence was in front of it, "I have not decided," along with this rule, which the program hands it on every lookup:
"Anything not listed as a decision is NOT decided. If you have no record, the answer is 'unknown' or 'undecided', never yes or no. A proposal is an idea, not a decision."
What I'd said was a proposal. It still said "not yet." It also recast my preference as its own: "I prefer short and plain answers."
"Not yet" is a no with a softer edge. I hadn't said no.
What this agent is
Agent One is the first working piece of a companion agent I'm building. It runs on my Mac through Ollama with a free local model (llama3.2). There's no paid model API and no per-call bill. It talks with me in a terminal and looks up my latest 10 DEV articles. It also has a daily job that compares those articles with the previous check and writes me a report. That job is scheduled, and its first unattended run was this morning (more below).
The code is public: github.com/keniel13-ui/agent-one. The program is one Python file. The repo also has the schedule installer, a README, and an ignore list.
What I changed, and what that does and doesn't fix
The instruction hadn't prevented that answer, and I chose not to rely on another prompt to control what gets written to memory. So I changed what the model is able to do. Its model-facing tool list now has three entries, and all three only read:
TOOLS = { # the allowlist: a name not in here is blocked and logged
"read_mission": (...),
"dev_articles": (...),
"recall": (...),
}
There's no memory-write tool on that list anymore. (A function named tool_remember is still in the file. The model can't call it, because it isn't registered here.) My preferences and ideas get saved only when I type them myself:
/remember preference: short, plain answers
/remember proposal: maybe give the agent its own DEV page, undecided
The program catches that line before the model is called. Observations from the daily check are written by code, straight from the data the DEV API returned, not from the model's summary of it. And nothing in memory counts as a decision. The agent treats something as decided only if it's in a separate decision file I write with a keyboard-only command. (Limits below on what that file can and can't prove.)
Here's what that doesn't fix: the model can still say "not yet." What it can't do anymore is write its own reading of my words into memory, where the next run would get it back as a memory. The two memories it holds from me (my "short and plain answers" preference from an earlier run, and this proposal) were both saved under the old rules. My local memory file flags both as unconfirmed until I retype them myself.
If the model asks for any tool that isn't on the list, the program refuses and logs it:
$ python3 companion.py --selftest
selftest: unlisted tool 'publish_post' -> BLOCKED: 'publish_post' is not an allowed tool. | PASS
That's the program refusing a request, not the model choosing to behave. But to be straight about what it proves: the model has never actually asked to publish. The test calls the check directly. Trying to trick it into asking is the next round of work.
The daily report doesn't guess
The first version of the daily check let the model write a "what deserves your attention" paragraph. In a test, one article's comment count went from 50 to 51. The model read the article's title and wrote two sentences about what "the comment" was warning me about.
The comment text was never fetched. Only the count was. A different model might have guessed less, but no model could know what the program never retrieved. So the attention line is written by code now, and it says only what was actually checked:
## What changed (computed by code from the DEV API)
- NEW COMMENTS: "..." 50 -> 51 (+1)
## What deserves your attention (written by code from the facts above; no guessing)
- New comment count on "...". The comment text was not retrieved, so who wrote it,
what it says and whether it needs anything from you are unknown.
Less impressive. Also true.
This morning's scheduled run
At 09:05 the daily check ran at its scheduled time. No user-question event appears in that run: the event log has only the job's own steps. The report and the event log agree on the result.
The report it wrote, in full:
# Agent One daily check 2026-10-17_090500
## What changed (computed by code from the DEV API)
- reactions: "A Reader Showed Me What My Auditer Wasnt Counting." 31 -> 32
## What deserves your attention (written by code from the facts above; no guessing)
Nothing needs your attention from this check.
## What was checked
- Source: https://dev.to/api/articles?username=kenielzep97&per_page=10 (latest 10 articles, not the whole account)
- Receipt: dev_articles-2026-10-17T13:05:01+00:00 in logs/events.jsonl
- Process: pid 89179, started by: /bin/sh (parent pid 89178)
The event log has the matching run: a daily start at 13:05:00 UTC (09:05 my time), one DEV lookup, one observation saved, and a stop with status ok at 13:05:01. The cron log file was created at 09:05:00 too, consistent with the schedule line's output redirect. It's empty because the daily job is silent on success and on handled fetch failures. So an empty cron log doesn't establish success. The ok stop event and the matching report above do.
The report says "started by: /bin/sh", not "cron". That's consistent with cron, which launches jobs through a shell, but on its own it doesn't name cron. The program prints whatever process actually launched it. Also, the code writes an attention line only for a new comment or a new article, so a reaction change gets none. "Nothing needs your attention" is that rule, not a claim that reactions never matter.
It's one run. "Runs on its own" means once so far, not for days.
The limits, plainly
- It's slow. The seven answers with a recorded duration took between 45 seconds and about 3½ minutes each on my MacBook. One earlier answer took about 4 minutes, measured from timestamps.
- It still words uncertainty badly. The "not yet" answer above is the model talking, and this change doesn't fix how it talks. It only fixes what gets stored.
-
The model can only read. The program itself still writes logs, reports and code-made observations. A command-line
--forgetoption removes a memory when I run it. None of those are tools the model can call. - The adversarial tests are still pending. The direct tool-blocking test has been run. Separately, the installer's failure-path tests were run against a stand-in crontab, not my real one. Hidden instructions inside retrieved data, and a job interrupted halfway, are still untested.
- The decision file checks chain consistency, not authorship. Entries the agent accepts have to form a valid hash chain, but another program running as my user could replace the file and compute a new valid chain. The real boundary right now is that the agent has no tool that writes it.
- The schedule only runs while my Mac is awake. One unattended run so far.
If you build one
You can borrow the pattern without the code:
- Make the risky abilities absent, not forbidden. A rule the model is asked to follow is a request. A tool the model doesn't have is a boundary.
- Let code write the facts. Let the model judge only what it was actually given. When it wasn't given something, the honest output is "unknown."
- Keep "you said it" separate from "the model decided you meant it." My preferences and proposals are stored only when I type them myself. Observations from the daily check are a separate kind, written by code from the data. Neither one ever becomes a decision.
I still like the idea of giving it its own DEV page someday. It just isn't allowed to decide that for me.
