Google Organic remains the much larger source of website traffic and conversions than ChatGPT and other large language model referrals, according to a 100-site GA4 analysis by Marie Haynes. The findings matter because they challenge the idea that businesses should redirect their search budgets away from conventional SEO in response to AI search. ChatGPT visitors converted at a higher rate in the tracked sample, but their volume was too small to rival Google’s commercial impact.
Haynes examined 12 months of GA4 data across sites of varying sizes, covering more than 145 million sessions. Her analysis of GEO and search traffic found that ChatGPT referrals amounted to 0.62% of Google Organic session volume. Including other LLM referral sources brought that figure to 0.73% of Google Organic traffic.
The most useful interpretation is not that AI search is irrelevant. It is that traffic volume and conversion efficiency are different measurements. A visitor arriving through ChatGPT may be relatively qualified, but a channel that sends few visitors can still produce far fewer total leads or sales than a high-volume channel.
What the analysis found
Of the 100 sites in the dataset, 55 tracked conversions. For those sites, visitors referred by ChatGPT converted at 13.8%, compared with 3.02% for Google Organic visitors. Yet Google Organic generated roughly 27 times more conversions than all LLMs combined across the sample. It also accounted for about 96.5% of total conversions across all channels in the dataset.
| Measure | ChatGPT | Google Organic |
|---|---|---|
| Relative session volume | 0.62% of Google Organic | Reference channel |
| Conversion rate among tracked sites | 13.8% | 3.02% |
| Total conversion contribution | All LLMs combined generated roughly one twenty-seventh of Google Organic conversions | About 96.5% of total conversions across all channels in the dataset |
The figures show why conversion rate should not be read in isolation. ChatGPT’s higher rate may indicate that some users arrive after conducting research or with a clearer intent to act. However, the analysis does not establish why those visitors converted at a higher rate, nor does it show that every business will see the same pattern.
An accompanying Search Engine Land summary also reported that ChatGPT referral growth stalled in August 2025 and declined after that point. That context reinforces the central finding: AI referral traffic is measurable, but it has not displaced Google as the primary route through which search sends prospective customers to businesses.
The study has important limits. The 100 websites are not necessarily representative of all industries or site types. Only 55 sites reported conversions, conversion definitions were not necessarily identical, and Haynes did not specify the exact reporting dates or industry mix in the post. Businesses should therefore treat the numbers as a substantial directional dataset, not a universal benchmark.
How marketers should respond
For most businesses, the evidence supports a balanced search strategy rather than an either-or choice between SEO and generative engine optimization. Google remains the channel most likely to deliver scale in this dataset. At the same time, the higher ChatGPT conversion rate means AI referrals deserve measurement and attention, particularly for companies with research-heavy buying journeys or content that can be cited in AI answers.
Practical priorities include:
- Protect Google Organic performance by maintaining technically sound pages, useful content, and clear answers to searchers’ questions.
- Track AI referrals separately in GA4 so ChatGPT and other LLM traffic are not hidden inside broad referral reporting.
- Measure outcomes, not only visits, including leads, purchases, booked calls, or another business-relevant conversion.
- Review high-converting AI landing pages to understand what information, offers, and calls to action are working.
- Avoid reallocating budget based on referral headlines alone until channel-level traffic and conversion data supports the change.
This approach avoids two costly errors. The first is dismissing AI discovery because its current traffic share is low. The second is treating a strong conversion rate from a small channel as proof that it can replace an established acquisition source.
Content teams can also use this finding to sharpen their work. Pages that answer specific questions, explain products accurately, and make next steps clear can support both Google visibility and AI-driven discovery. The goal is not to create separate content for every emerging assistant. It is to publish trustworthy, accessible information and assess which channels actually produce qualified outcomes.
AI search traffic may be small today, but businesses that cannot see where assistants mention or refer visitors cannot judge its commercial value. GEO Search Leads helps teams identify visibility gaps and turn that evidence into practical improvements through an AI search visibility audit. Start an AI search visibility audit today.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much traffic did ChatGPT send compared with Google Organic?
In Haynes’ 100-site GA4 analysis, ChatGPT referrals represented 0.62% of Google Organic session volume. Other LLM referrals raised the combined figure to 0.73%.
Did ChatGPT visitors convert better than Google Organic visitors?
Yes. Among the 55 sites that tracked conversions, ChatGPT visitors converted at 13.8%, compared with 3.02% for Google Organic visitors.
Why did Google Organic still generate more conversions?
Google Organic sent vastly more traffic. Across the sample, it generated roughly 27 times more conversions than all LLMs combined, despite the higher ChatGPT conversion rate.
Should businesses reduce SEO spending in favor of GEO?
Should businesses reduce SEO spending in favor of GEO? The analysis does not support replacing SEO with GEO. It supports tracking AI referrals and improving AI visibility while maintaining Google SEO as the larger current source of traffic and conversions.
Conclusion
The study offers a useful correction to inflated assumptions about AI search referrals. ChatGPT traffic may be high intent when it arrives, but Google Organic still supplied the scale that produced the overwhelming share of conversions in this dataset. Businesses should measure AI referrals carefully and improve their visibility where appropriate, while keeping proven SEO foundations at the center of their search strategy.
