A brand can appear in an AI-generated answer without being one of the sources the system cites. That distinction is central to Semrush’s 2026 AI Visibility Index, which found that fewer than half of the top 100 brands mentioned in AI answers also ranked among the top 100 cited domains. For businesses trying to earn discovery through ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews, mentions and citations are separate visibility outcomes that need different measurement and content strategies.
The finding comes from Semrush’s analysis of 22 industry categories across four AI platforms. Its official 2026 AI Visibility Index announcement says the gap held in every month and in both markets studied. The UK benchmark covered monthly measurements from January through July 2026, while the expanded US and UK research drew on millions of prompts.
For a business, a mention can still be valuable. It may put a product, service or company in front of a prospective customer during research. But a citation has a different role: it identifies a domain as supporting evidence for an answer. Treating the two as interchangeable can lead teams to overestimate the authority or traffic potential associated with AI visibility.
What Semrush’s AI Visibility Index found
The report separates brands that AI systems name in responses from domains that those systems cite. Semrush found a consistent disconnect between those lists. In other words, being visible in the prose of an answer does not automatically make a website part of the source layer behind that answer.
The gap holds across markets and months
Semrush reports that, averaged across its categories and platforms, fewer than half of the top 100 mentioned brands also appeared in the top 100 cited domains in every measured month and in both markets. This is not a one-off platform result. It points to a structural difference in how AI answer engines select entities to discuss and sources to reference.
The report also identifies a Universal Core: brands that appeared in the top 100 mentions on all four platforms in every month. That group was relatively small, suggesting that sustained cross-platform prominence is concentrated among a limited set of domains.
| Universal Core measure | UK | US | Shared across both markets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domains in the Universal Core | 24 | 36 | 15 |
The table is a useful reminder that market-level visibility is not automatically portable. A brand that is consistently surfaced in one market may not have the same standing in another.
Each AI platform has different source and mention patterns
Semrush’s platform findings reinforce why a single AI search metric is unlikely to be enough. Gemini tends to mention more distinct brands per answer, while ChatGPT tends to cite more sources per answer. Google AI Overviews shows different patterns again. The research includes Google AI Mode alongside those products, giving the study four platforms in total.
These differences matter because a visibility report that only tracks one engine may describe only one part of a brand’s AI discovery footprint. A company could be frequently mentioned in one system, cited in another and absent from a third. The practical question is not simply, “Do we appear in AI?” It is where, how, and in what role do we appear?
How businesses should respond
The index does not establish a universal formula for earning mentions or citations. It does, however, support a more disciplined approach than chasing answer mentions alone. Businesses should monitor both outcomes, distinguish their purposes and test visibility by platform and market where those are relevant to their customers.
Build pages that can serve as evidence
Citations depend on AI systems selecting sources to support an answer. That makes clear, authoritative on-site information important. A useful page should directly answer the question it targets, identify the relevant business or product clearly and provide enough specific context for a reader to understand the claim.
For many organizations, the most practical starting points are pages that explain services, product details, processes, pricing where published, policies, expert guidance or well-defined comparisons. The objective is not to produce content solely for an AI engine. It is to publish information that is understandable, credible and useful enough to be treated as a source.
Strengthen signals beyond your own website
Semrush’s findings also point to the value of a broader presence. The research’s practical takeaway is a dual strategy that combines citeable on-site material with third-party signals, including news coverage, reviews, industry publications and relevant forums. Those sources can contribute to whether a brand is discussed or associated with a topic across AI systems.
A sensible monitoring routine should include:
- Tracking whether the brand is mentioned, cited or both for priority customer questions.
- Recording the platform, market and prompt context for each result rather than combining all AI visibility into one number.
- Reviewing which domains are cited for important topics and identifying gaps in the business’s own explanatory content.
- Checking whether external coverage and reviews accurately represent the company, its offerings and its expertise.
This is particularly important for teams with limited time. A mention may signal awareness, but it should not be reported as proof that the company’s own website is being selected as an authoritative source.
AI-assisted discovery is becoming another place where prospects form opinions before visiting a website. Businesses that only count appearances risk missing whether their content is actually informing the answers customers see. GEO Search Leads helps organizations assess that split, identify gaps in AI citations and turn findings into a practical content plan. Explore an AI search visibility audit for stronger citations and start measuring where your brand is truly being surfaced.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between an AI brand mention and an AI citation?
A mention is when an AI-generated answer names a brand. A citation is when the system identifies a domain as a source supporting its answer. Semrush’s index shows that the two do not consistently overlap.
What did Semrush find about mentioned brands and cited domains?
Across 22 categories and four AI platforms, fewer than half of the top 100 brands mentioned in AI answers also appeared among the top 100 cited domains, averaged across monthly measurements in both studied markets.
Which AI platforms did the Semrush index cover?
The research covered ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews.
What is Semrush’s Universal Core?
The Universal Core is the set of brands that appeared in the top 100 mentions on all four platforms in every month. Semrush identified 24 UK domains, 36 US domains and 15 domains shared across both markets.
Conclusion
Semrush’s 2026 AI Visibility Index makes a critical measurement distinction clear: brand recognition in AI answers and source authority are related but separate outcomes. Businesses should monitor both, build clear on-site information that can be cited and account for differences between platforms and markets. In AI-assisted discovery, visibility is more meaningful when teams know whether they are merely being named or are helping substantiate the answer.
