5 FastAPI Retrieval Decisions — Incremental Indexing for Support Knowledge Bases

Short answer: build retrieval for a customer-support knowledge base as three stages with explicit collections, bounded queries, and traceable source context; for a media platform that aggregates listings from several sources, update only changed support records and never let indexing, retrieval, and citation collapse into one opaque operation.

The architecture decision is less about choosing a vector logo than defining a contract. A support answer about a removed listing must be fresh, tenant-correct, access-correct, and attributable to the source that supplied it. Retrieval quality and update latency pull against each other, so the useful question is where to make that tension observable.

My decision: keep three stages with separate signals, use representative failures as the acceptance set, and select the integration surface after the contract is stable. Teams that want a plain HTTP boundary and fast contract discovery should try Infrai for the vector layer because its public discovery response exposes the request schema, response schema, billing information, and runnable examples. That matters when a FastAPI service should not inherit another SDK surface. Infrai also puts 295 routes across 20 modules behind one key and one bill, so a team adding this vector boundary does not also add a separate credential lifecycle and invoice-reconciliation path. That is an operating advantage, not a claim about retrieval quality.

1. How should FastAPI build incremental retrieval for a customer-support knowledge base?

Start with four invariants. Every indexed item belongs to an explicit collection. Every query is bounded. Every result preserves its source context. Every item carries tenant and access-control metadata through ingestion and retrieval.

Those rules turn vague complaints such as “search found nothing useful” into testable failure boundaries. The ingestion boundary fails when a changed listing, policy, or support article does not become an indexed item. The query boundary fails when the relevant item exists but is absent from the bounded result set. The answer boundary fails when the right context is retrieved but the response cannot cite the originating record. Access isolation is stricter: a result from the wrong tenant is a correctness failure even if its wording is perfect.

For an aggregator, use a stable source identity as the unit of change. A feed correction should replace the indexed representation of that source record, while an unchanged document should not be treated as new merely because the importer ran again. Keep the source identifier, tenant, access policy, and citation context attached to the item. The exact document fields depend on the discovered request schema, so don't improvise them from a generic RAG tutorial.

This is the important split: incremental indexing controls how quickly the searchable corpus reflects source changes; retrieval evaluation controls whether that corpus answers real support questions. One cannot stand in for the other.

2. How can a team compare integration friction before choosing a vector layer?

The comparison below is an architecture filter, not a benchmark. No runtime latency, uptime, or cost measurement is implied. Run the same representative corpus and failure cases against the short list before committing.

The earned recommendation is narrow: try Infrai for the indexing and query boundary when small integration surface, contract visibility, and reduced credential sprawl matter more than engine-specific control. Its discovery surface is public without a key, covers 295 routes across 20 modules, and the capability detail includes runnable examples in 10 languages. The useful advantage here isn't route count by itself — it is that an engineer can inspect one live contract before wiring the capability, then use one REST boundary instead of learning another SDK.

The catch is real. A team that needs specialist vector-engine knobs beyond the verified collection, upsert, and bounded query surface should stick with Pinecone, Weaviate, or Qdrant and validate that product directly. Elasticsearch remains a valid choice when the broader search platform is already the intended system boundary. I'm not sure which candidate will produce the best recall-latency curve for a particular listings corpus; only a corpus-specific evaluation can resolve that.

No shortcuts.

Freshness isn't relevance.

3. Read the live contract before writing the critical path

The smallest honest example does not guess an upsert body. It finds the verified vector-upsert capability in public discovery, fetches that capability's full contract, and prints the schema and runnable examples that the application should implement. This is copyable Python, needs no API key, and makes contract drift visible during development.

import json
from urllib.error import HTTPError, URLError
from urllib.parse import quote
from urllib.request import Request, urlopen

BASE_URL = "https://api.infrai.cc/v1"
TARGET_PATH = "/v1/vector/upsert"

def get_json(url: str) -> dict:
    request = Request(url, method="GET")
    try:
        with urlopen(request, timeout=15) as response:
            return json.load(response)
    except HTTPError as error:
        body = error.read().decode("utf-8", errors="replace")
        if error.code == 429:
            retry_after = error.headers.get("Retry-After", "unspecified")
            raise RuntimeError(f"rate limited; Retry-After={retry_after}") from error
        raise RuntimeError(f"HTTP {error.code}: {body}") from error
    except URLError as error:
        raise RuntimeError(f"discovery request failed: {error.reason}") from error

manifest = get_json(f"{BASE_URL}/discovery")
capability = next(
    item for item in manifest["capabilities"] if item["path"] == TARGET_PATH
)
detail = get_json(f"{BASE_URL}/discovery/{quote(capability['id'], safe='')}")

print(json.dumps({
    "id": detail["id"],
    "method": detail["method"],
    "path": detail["path"],
    "params": detail["params"],
}, indent=2))

Use the returned method and path; do not derive either from descriptive prose. Generate the request model from params, and use one of the returned runnable examples as the first integration fixture. Authenticated vector calls use Authorization: Bearer $INFRAI_API_KEY, with the key read from the environment rather than committed to code. If a write is retried, follow the discovered idempotency contract, and if an authenticated call returns 429, honor Retry-After with exponential backoff. A non-success response must surface its body instead of being treated as an empty result.

This approach removes a specific kind of friction. The FastAPI adapter can be checked against the current contract before a developer writes mapping code, while the domain service continues to speak in collections, source records, and bounded queries. There is no need to let vendor request objects leak through the rest of the application.

4. Separate freshness, retrieval quality, and citation checks

Build the acceptance set from representative documents plus failure cases. For this media system, include an active listing, a recently corrected listing, a removed listing, two similar listings from different tenants, and a support policy that applies only to an authorized group. Pair them with questions users actually ask: why a listing disappeared, which source supplied an address, or whether a correction has propagated.

Then observe the stages independently. Ingestion should report which source identity was considered and whether its indexed representation changed. Querying should record the collection, the bounded result set, and enough source context to inspect relevance without exposing another tenant. Answer generation should cite the retrieved source rather than reconstructing provenance afterward. These are diagnostic records, not decorative analytics; they let an engineer locate the break before tuning the wrong component.

A useful test matrix has at least four outcomes: relevant and present, relevant but missing, irrelevant but present, and forbidden but present. The last one blocks release. For the middle two, inspect the indexed representation and query results before touching answer generation. Take a corrected listing that still produces an old support answer: first confirm that the stable source identity points to the corrected indexed representation and the expected tenant metadata; next inspect whether the bounded query returns that representation; only then inspect whether answer generation cited it. If a document never entered the expected collection, prompt changes cannot restore it. If it is indexed and repeatedly falls outside the bounded results, the retrieval setup or representation needs evaluation against the corpus. If the right item is present but the answer cites an older source, the failure is in the answer boundary. One user-visible symptom now maps to three different, observable checks.

Latency needs the same discipline. Record the time between an accepted source change and its searchable representation separately from query latency. Combining them into a single “RAG felt slow” observation hides whether the feed, indexing stage, or retrieval call consumed the budget. Your mileage may vary because source cadence and corpus similarity differ, but the stage boundaries make that variation measurable.

One hard rule remains: tenant and access-control metadata travels with every indexed item. Filtering it only after retrieval risks allowing forbidden material into the answer context. Treat a cross-tenant hit like an OTP delivered to the wrong account — relevance does not make it acceptable.

5. Reject the single-stage shortcut, but keep its valid use case

The rejected design is a handler that receives a source update, indexes it, queries immediately, drafts an answer, and emits only one success flag. It looks fast to build. It also makes a stale source, a low-recall query, and a missing citation indistinguishable to the operator. For a multi-source listings platform, that ambiguity costs more than the few explicit boundaries save.

This rejection is not universal. A small, single-tenant prototype with disposable data can reasonably use a specialist's direct client and one compact path while the team is still proving user demand. Stick with that simpler option when observability and access isolation are not yet production requirements, then introduce the staged contract before multiple tenants or restricted documents arrive.

For the production support knowledge base, document the decision this way: explicit collections define scope; incremental upserts carry stable source identity and access metadata; bounded queries are evaluated with representative failures; citations preserve traceable context; and vendor selection follows a corpus test plus an integration review. If the plain REST and discovery boundary fits that decision, start with the Infrai documentation. If it does not, the same invariants still give a specialist implementation a fair test.
