The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable iPhone, and it uses Touch ID rather than Face ID.
Mark Gurman reports that Apple is working on under-display Face ID, with Duo 2 prototypes said to place it beneath the outer display.
Apple has not announced the Duo 2 or those features; Gurman says the thin displays make adding components underneath difficult.
The first iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable iPhone, doesn't have Face ID. It uses Touch ID, which is fingerprint unlocking. According to Engadget's review, Touch ID works accurately, but it can be slower to unlock the phone than some users expect. Early reviews of the device have been generally very positive.
It's not known whether Face ID will be available on the iPhone Duo 2's internal display. Adding the necessary hardware to both displays could be difficult and add to the cost. The iPhone Duo costs $2.000.
Gurman says that the iPhone Duo's displays are very thin, which makes it difficult to fit more components underneath them. Apple wanted the internal and external displays to have the same capabilities. That's why, according to Gurman, a single-screen Face ID solution was considered unlikely for the first generation.

The first iPhone Duo already has a camera under the display. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max have smaller components around the Dynamic Island. Gurman cites the two models as evidence that Apple is moving more components under the displays.
Gurman also mentions that a future iPhone Duo 2 may have a Power button. This button first appeared on the iPhone 15 Pro.
