Apple Launches Multiseat Subscriptions for Businesses and Schools, Expanding App Store Monetization

Apple has introduced multiseat purchasing for auto-renewable subscriptions, allowing businesses, educational institutions, and groups to purchase multiple subscriptions through a single transaction. The new capability expands the App Store's subscription model beyond individual customers, giving developers additional ways to distribute their software to teams and organizations.

Announced on October 22, 2026, the feature is available for organizational purchases through Apple Business and Apple School Manager. Organizations can acquire the number of subscription seats they need through a single Apple in-app purchase and manage access using their existing device management tools. They can also add or remove seats as their requirements change.

Apple is also preparing a second component, Group Purchases, which will let an individual subscriber purchase multiple seats and invite others to join. Apple plans to introduce this capability on the App Store later this winter, giving smaller teams and groups a way to share subscription access without requiring formal enterprise purchasing arrangements.

The announcement represents a significant development for subscription-based applications, particularly productivity tools, educational software, collaboration platforms, and creative applications that serve multiple users.

1. What Is Multiseat Purchasing?

Traditionally, many App Store subscriptions have been purchased for use by a single subscriber. A business that wanted to provide the same application to ten employees might need to arrange ten separate subscriptions, depending on the product's existing distribution model.

Multiseat purchasing introduces an alternative: a customer can purchase an auto-renewable subscription in a quantity greater than one, with each seat providing access to an individual user.

For example, a company using a project-management application could purchase 25 seats in one transaction rather than asking each employee to subscribe separately.

The subscription continues to renew automatically according to its billing terms, while access to the application is managed across the purchased seats.

Apple supports two distinct ways of purchasing these subscriptions:

Volume Purchasing: Businesses and educational institutions acquire seats through Apple Business or Apple School Manager and assign them using their existing device management workflows.
Group Purchases: An individual subscriber purchases multiple seats and invites other people to join the subscription. Apple handles the seat assignment and invitation process.

Both approaches allow developers to offer subscriptions to multiple users, but they target different purchasing situations and use different methods to manage access.

2. Volume Purchasing for Businesses and Educational Institutions

Volume Purchasing is designed for organizations that already use Apple's business and education management services.

With this capability, organizations can discover eligible auto-renewable subscriptions through Apple Business and Apple School Manager and purchase multiple seats in a single transaction.

After purchasing a subscription, the organization can assign seats through its existing device management provider. This is particularly useful for organizations that already manage employee devices, educational accounts, and application distribution centrally.

Flexible seat management

One of the main advantages is the ability to adjust subscription quantities as organizational needs change.

A business could initially purchase 20 seats for a team and later add more as it recruits employees. Conversely, it could remove seats when employees leave or a project ends.

This flexibility reduces the administrative work associated with managing individual subscriptions and makes it easier for organizations to align software spending with their actual requirements.

Practical examples

Businesses: A company can purchase seats for a team using a shared productivity, project-management, or collaboration application.

Schools and universities: An educational institution can purchase subscriptions for students, teachers, or specific departments and distribute access through its established management systems.

IT administrators: Centralized purchasing and assignment can simplify deployment when an organization needs to provision access for many users.

The core benefit is that purchasing and user assignment can fit into the organization's existing workflows rather than requiring every user to subscribe independently.

3. Group Purchases: A New Model for Teams and Individuals

Group Purchases extend multiseat subscriptions beyond formal organizations.

Under this model, an individual subscriber can purchase multiple seats through an in-app purchase and invite other people to access the subscription. Apple manages the invitation and seat-assignment experience, making it easier for groups to share a subscription.

Potential use cases include:

A small team sharing access to a productivity application.
Freelancers collaborating through a creative application.
Friends or colleagues splitting the cost of a shared service.
A department purchasing access to a specialized application without going through a company's formal IT procurement process.

The feature could also help developers reach customers who would not normally buy enterprise licenses but still have a genuine need for multi-user access.

How Group Purchases differ from Volume Purchasing

The distinction is primarily about who buys the seats and how access is distributed.

With Volume Purchasing, an organization buys the subscriptions and assigns seats through its device management infrastructure.

With Group Purchases, a subscriber purchases multiple seats and invites the other participants. This makes the latter model more accessible to informal teams, small businesses, and individual users.

Developers should consider which purchasing experience best fits their audience before enabling the relevant options.

4. Important Timeline: Sandbox Testing and Public Availability

Apple's rollout has two separate stages.

October 22, 2026 — Volume Purchasing launches.

Eligible organizations can begin purchasing subscriptions in volume through Apple Business and Apple School Manager.

Late October or November 2026 — Group Purchase testing.

Developers will be able to configure and test group subscriptions using a Sandbox Apple Account before the public launch. Apple's individual announcement page specifies October 28, 2026, while its current main Apple Developer News listing says testing will begin in November. Developers should check the latest official guidance for the confirmed testing date.

Winter 2026–2027 — Group Purchases launch on the App Store.

Apple plans to make Group Purchases available to App Store customers, allowing subscribers to purchase multiple seats and invite others.

Developers should use the testing period to review their subscription configuration, user experience, entitlement handling, and group membership logic.

5. Multiseat Purchasing Is Enabled by Default — With Exceptions

Apple says multiseat purchasing is enabled by default for auto-renewable subscriptions in App Store Connect unless developers have previously changed the setting.

However, this is not universal. Apple's App Store Connect documentation specifies that certain existing subscriptions are opted out by default, including subscriptions created before September 14, 2026, that do not use StoreKit 2 or that have Family Sharing enabled.

Developers should therefore review their actual configuration rather than assume that every existing subscription is ready for multiseat purchasing.

Where to manage the settings

Developers with an Account Holder, Admin, or App Manager role can manage the relevant purchase options in App Store Connect.

The general process is:

Open App Store Connect and select the application.
Navigate to the app's subscription settings.
Select the relevant auto-renewable subscription.
Open Purchase Options and edit the multiseat purchasing setting.
Select the distribution channels where the subscription should be available and save the changes.

The available channels include the App Store, Apple Business, and Apple School Manager. Availability and multiseat purchasing can be configured according to the subscription's supported distribution model.

Developers should pay attention to the implications of changing these settings after approval. Disabling multiseat purchasing prevents new customers from purchasing multiple seats and removes the subscription from Apple Business and Apple School Manager. Existing subscriptions continue renewing until canceled, but customers cannot add seats.

Removing Apple Business or Apple School Manager availability can also affect future renewals for existing organizational subscribers.

6. StoreKit 2 and Technical Implementation

Developers planning to support group and organizational subscriptions should review Apple's StoreKit 2 requirements.

Apple identifies StoreKit 2 as a requirement for offering subscriptions to groups and organizations. Applications need to handle purchases that can include more than one seat and correctly provide access to the people assigned to those seats.

For Group Purchases, developers should review the StoreKit purchase flow, determine how users select the number of seats, and integrate the invitation experience into the application.

For Volume Purchasing, developers should understand how assigned seats are reflected in subscription access and how organizational management workflows interact with the application's entitlement system.

App Store Connect API

The App Store Connect API supports configuring multiseat subscriptions for organizations. Its subscription resource includes attributes for multiseat status and market settings, allowing developers to manage whether organizational purchases are supported and where the subscription can be offered.

This can be useful for developers managing many subscriptions or automating configuration across a product portfolio.

App Store Server API

Apple has also added server-side API capabilities for multiseat access management.

The App Store Server API includes endpoints for retrieving customer group information and group members. Related data structures identify whether access originated from an organizational purchase or a consumer group purchase.

These capabilities can help developers reconcile subscription access with group membership and build more robust account-management systems. The newly added group endpoints are documented as Sandbox-only in the September 28, 2026 API changelog, so developers should verify production availability and subsequent release notes before relying on them in live systems.

7. Pricing Strategies and Volume Discounts

Multiseat purchasing creates opportunities to rethink subscription pricing.

A developer could offer the same per-seat price regardless of quantity, making the pricing model straightforward. Alternatively, volume pricing can provide lower per-seat prices for larger purchases.

Apple's WWDC26 guidance describes support for up to five volume-pricing bands, allowing developers to offer discounts based on the quantity of seats purchased.

For instance, a developer might establish one price for small groups and progressively lower per-seat pricing for larger teams. Actual price points and purchase thresholds would depend on the developer's configuration and business strategy.

Volume pricing can make applications more attractive to organizations while allowing developers to build recurring revenue from multiple users under a single purchasing relationship.

However, lower per-seat prices are not automatically more profitable. Developers should account for infrastructure costs, support requirements, expected retention, and the additional value provided by organizational customers before determining their pricing structure.

8. Family Sharing and Subscription Access Considerations

Developers should review how multiseat purchasing interacts with Family Sharing.

Apple's documentation states that when a subscription supports both Family Sharing and multiseat purchases, only the group purchaser's access is eligible for Family Sharing. Additional seats in a multiseat group are for individual use.

This distinction matters for developers whose existing subscriptions already support sharing with family members.

Teams should also ensure that their applications can distinguish between the purchaser, invited group members, and organizationally assigned users where relevant. Subscription access should be granted based on the appropriate entitlement and membership information, rather than assuming that every group member is the original purchaser.

A clear account-management experience is particularly important when users join or leave a group, a seat is removed, or a subscription is canceled.

9. What This Means for App Developers

The introduction of multiseat purchasing gives subscription developers an opportunity to address a broader range of customers.

Previously, applications designed primarily around individual subscriptions could require additional systems or separate commercial arrangements to support teams. Apple's new purchasing options provide standardized paths for distributing subscriptions to both organizations and informal groups.

Developers should take several practical steps:

Audit existing auto-renewable subscriptions and verify their multiseat settings.
Ensure that the application uses StoreKit 2 and supports the relevant entitlement flows.
Decide whether the product is suited to organizational purchasing, consumer group purchases, or both.
Review per-seat pricing and consider whether volume discounts make sense for the business.
Test group membership, invitations, seat removal, subscription renewals, and access revocation.
Review the relevant App Store Connect and App Store Server API documentation as the new features become available.

These changes may be particularly valuable for software-as-a-service applications, education platforms, creative tools, and productivity products that naturally serve teams rather than isolated individuals.

Conclusion

Apple's launch of multiseat subscription purchasing expands the App Store's commercial model by making auto-renewable subscriptions easier to purchase and manage for multiple users.

Volume Purchasing is now available for eligible organizations through Apple Business and Apple School Manager, while Group Purchases are planned for a later App Store rollout. Both options offer developers a way to serve customers who need shared access without treating every user as a separate subscription transaction.

The most important next steps for developers are to check their App Store Connect settings, verify StoreKit 2 support, plan appropriate pricing, and test the relevant membership and entitlement flows.

As the feature expands, developers that adapt their subscription products for teams and institutions may be better positioned to reach customers beyond the traditional individual-subscriber market.
