Airbnb has announced upcoming changes to its global check-out rules, taking effect November 20, 2026.
The policy shifts platform guidelines by prohibiting hosts from requiring guests to handle intensive chores like taking out trash, washing dishes, or stripping bedding.
What's changing for visitors
Under the new guidelines, owners are no longer allowed to ask guests to take out the trash, wash used dishes, or remove the sheets from the beds.
However, owners can still ask for some simple things, such as:
- Collect used towels in one place.
- Place dirty dishes in the sink.
- Separate trash from recycling by using the indoor bins in the house.
Additionally, owners cannot prohibit guests from using advertised amenities in the home, such as air conditioning. They can, however, request that the device be turned off upon departure.

Exceptions and local rules
The company clarifies that there will be exceptions for special cases. For example, in areas with wildlife, waste may be required to be disposed of in special protective bins, while in areas with severe water shortages, there may be local restrictions on water use.
The reason for the decision and the owners' reactions
Airbnb explained that demands that resemble the work of a professional cleaner negatively affect guests' mood and ultimately lead to worse reviews.
Although the changes are welcome for travelers, many accommodation owners reacted negatively. On the platform's online forum, they expressed their dissatisfaction and protested the new decisions.
