Most affiliates click accept on an affiliate agreement without reading it. Then a commission is reversed, an account is closed, or a promotion method turns out to be banned, and the terms were there all along.
Reading the terms takes less than an hour. This summary walks through what to look for so nothing surprises you later. It is general information and not legal advice.
Commission And Payment Clauses
Start with the money. Find the commission rate, how it is calculated, and when it is paid. Look for the payout minimum, the payment schedule, and the hold period before earnings become payable.
Check the currency and the payment method too. Fees can reduce small payouts. Write down the numbers so you can compare programs side by side instead of trusting memory.
Cookies, Attribution, And Clawbacks
The cookie window decides how long a click can earn you credit. A short window favors fast buyers. Attribution rules decide who wins when two affiliates send the same buyer, and many programs credit the last click.
Clawbacks matter just as much. A refund window lets the program take back a commission when a buyer returns a product or cancels early. Know the number of days, because a payout is not safe until that window closes. A $100 sale with a $20 commission is only yours once the refund period ends.
Prohibited Methods
Every program lists what you cannot do. Common bans include bidding on the brand name in paid search, using the brand's trademark in your domain, posting coupon codes on deal sites, and sending spam. Some programs also limit incentives, such as offering buyers cash back.
Breaking a rule can cost you the commission or the account. When a rule is unclear, ask support in writing and save the answer.
Exclusivity, Termination, And Changes
Some programs ask you to promote only their product, or to avoid competitors in the same article. Read exclusivity terms closely, because they can limit how you review products on your site.
Then read how the program can end the deal. Many agreements let the company close your account or change the terms with short notice. Look at how they tell you about changes and how long unpaid earnings stay available after you leave.
Disclosure And Your Own Routine
Programs usually expect you to tell readers when you earn from a link. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission expects clear disclosure too, so put it near the link, not buried at the bottom of a page.
Finish with a simple routine. Save a dated copy of the terms when you join, add a reminder to check them every few months, and keep a short sheet with the key numbers. Terms change, and a dated copy shows what you agreed to.
Affiliate terms are not exciting, but they protect your income. Read the money clauses, the refund window, the banned methods, the exclusivity rules, and the exit terms before you promote anything. Save a dated copy and recheck it from time to time. The full article on the site covers the eight steps in detail, with charts and a worked example you can copy.
