Every new affiliate hits the same fork in the road before publishing a single post. Do you pick one narrow topic and go deep, or cover a few topics for more chances to earn?
The honest answer depends on your hours, your budget, and how fast you need proof that the model works. Most beginners have little of all three, so the choice matters more than it looks. Here is the short version of how to decide, with the numbers behind each step.
Start With One Niche
Start narrow and stay there until the site proves it can earn. Diversifying on day one feels safe because it looks like spreading risk. In practice it spreads your hours so thin that nothing gets enough work to rank, and a site that never ranks teaches you nothing.
A single niche gives you a clean test. If traffic shows up and clicks turn into commissions, you have proof. If not, you learn that fast and change course with only a few months lost.
Count Your Hours First
A decent affiliate post takes about 5 hours. With 10 hours a week, that is two posts a week, or 20 posts in 10 weeks if you stick to one niche.
Split the same 10 hours across three niches and each one gets under one post a week. Reaching 20 posts in your first niche now takes 30 weeks instead of 10. Search engines reward depth, so three sites with five posts each look like drafts, while one site with 20 related posts looks like an authority.
Run The Money Test
Before you commit, check that the niche can actually pay. Look for at least 5 real products with affiliate programs, plus buyer searches such as best, review, versus, and alternatives. Then check the commission style, since digital tools often pay 20 to 50 percent and many pay every month.
If a niche fails even one check, the fix is a better niche, not a second weak one stacked on top.
Build A Cluster, Then Widen
A cluster is 20 to 30 posts that cover one corner of your niche and link to each other. Finish it before adding anything new.
You are ready for a second niche when you see steady traffic, a few commissions, a finished cluster, and some spare time. Tick at least three of those four. Then pick a neighbor topic that shares the same reader, such as chairs and lighting for a home office site. A far away topic is better on its own site.
For most beginners the answer is simple. Niche down first, prove the model, then widen with neighbor topics.
You lose very little by starting narrow, because a niche that works can always grow. You can lose months by starting wide, because thin work in many places tends to produce nothing in all of them. Pick your first niche today, write the first post this week, and set a review date about 6 months after launch, then let real numbers, not a mood, tell you when to expand.
