Two affiliate offers can look equal on the surface and pay you in very different ways. One gives you a flat $60 when a reader buys. The other gives you $6 every month for as long as that customer stays.
Both are fair deals. The right pick depends on how you need your money to arrive and how long customers really stay. This summary walks through the choice so you can pick your first offer with a clear head.
The Two Models In Plain Words
A one-time commission pays once per sale. A reader clicks your link, buys, and you earn a flat amount or a percentage of that first order. Think of it as selling a lamp. You hand it over, you get paid, and the story ends.
A recurring commission pays again each time the customer pays. It shows up most with software and other subscription products. Think of it as renting a room. The income is smaller each month, but it keeps coming while the customer stays.
When The Money Actually Arrives
Most beginners check the rate first. A better first check is the calendar. A one-time payout usually lands after a validation period, because the program waits to see if the buyer asks for a refund. Programs also set a payout minimum, so small earnings can sit for months until they cross it.
Churn Decides The Value
Churn is the share of customers who cancel each month. Higher churn means shorter stays and a smaller lifetime payout. Take that $6 a month offer. At 5% churn a customer is worth about $120 over their life. At 10% churn the figure falls to about $60. At 15% it drops to about $40.
So the $60 flat offer beats the recurring one when customers leave fast. The recurring one wins when they stay.
Caps matter too. A program that pays for only 12 months of renewals is worth far less than one that pays for life. At 10% churn, a 12 month cap is worth about $43 and a 6 month cap about $28.
A Worked Example
Take Maya, who sells 24 products over six months. With a $60 one-time offer she earns $1,440. With the $6 recurring offer she earns about $428 in those same six months, because most of her customers have only paid a few times.
Her month six income is about $112 a month with around 19 customers still active, and about $1,012 is still to come. That later money brings the total to the same $1,440. The difference is timing. The flat offer pays early. The recurring offer pays late but keeps paying after she stops promoting.
How To Pick Your First Offer
Start with your own situation. If you need income soon, lean toward one-time payouts. If you can wait and your audience cares about long term tools, recurring wins. Then read the cookie window, the payout hold, and the minimum before you apply, since those terms change how the offer feels in real life.
Neither model is better by default. A flat payout pays you sooner and protects you from churn. A recurring payout rewards patience and builds a base you do not have to rebuild each month.
