Silent installation helps automate GBase Database(GBase 8s) deployment, but a failed installation can interrupt an otherwise straightforward process. In most cases, the first places to check are the response file, installation permissions, component dependencies, and available disk space.
Here are six common issues to investigate when ids_install -i silent fails.
1. License Acceptance Is Missing
A silent installation needs the license acceptance parameter. Check that your response file contains the following setting:
LICENSE_ACCEPTED = TRUE
Alternatively, pass the parameter directly to the installer:
./ids_install -i silent -f /opt/bundle.properties -DLICENSE_ACCEPTED=TRUE
If the license acceptance parameter is missing or incorrectly configured, the installation may stop before completing.
2. The Response File Path Is Incorrect
The installer cannot read parameters from a response file that does not exist or is inaccessible.
Check the file first:
ls -l /opt/bundle.properties
Confirm that the path specified by -f matches the actual file location and that the user running the installation has read permission.
For example:
./ids_install -i silent -f /opt/bundle.properties -DLICENSE_ACCEPTED=TRUE
If the command references the wrong directory or filename, correct the path before investigating more complicated causes.
3. The Installation Directory Has Incorrect Permissions
Directory permissions can prevent the installer from creating or updating files.
Inspect the target directory:
ls -ld /opt/GBASE/gbase
Check whether the installation process has the necessary permissions to write to the directory. If the directory already exists, also check its ownership and whether existing files could interfere with the installation.
Do not change ownership blindly. Choose permissions based on the installation procedure and the account intended to manage the database software.
4. Selected Components Have Missing Dependencies
A response file may specify multiple components through SELECTED_FEATURES. Some selected components may require additional dependencies or supporting packages.
If the installation fails during component setup:
- Review the selected features in the response file.
- Check the installation logs for dependency or package errors.
- Install any required dependencies.
- Remove unnecessary components from the selection if they are not needed for the current deployment.
Avoid removing components simply to make the installation pass. First identify the component responsible for the failure, then adjust the configuration accordingly.
5. There Is Not Enough Disk Space
A silent installation can fail if the target filesystem does not have enough free space for the installation files and temporary files.
Check available capacity:
df -h /opt
Also check the filesystem used for temporary files if the installer extracts packages under /tmp or another temporary directory.
If space is insufficient, clean up unnecessary files or select an appropriate filesystem with enough capacity. Remember that the installation package itself is not the only space requirement: extraction and installation can require additional temporary storage.
6. The Instance Initialization Runs as Root
Installing the GBase Database program and initializing a database instance are separate operations with different execution requirements.
Running ids_install as root is permitted. However, the instance initialization script must be run as the gbasedbt user.
If initialization is performed as root, files or directories may receive incorrect ownership, causing problems when the database instance is started or managed by gbasedbt.
Before starting the instance, verify that the relevant installation and instance files have the expected ownership. Follow the product's installation procedure to correct any ownership problems rather than repeatedly rerunning initialization commands.
A Practical Troubleshooting Order
When troubleshooting a failed GBase Database silent installation, check the following in order:
- Response file: Confirm that the file exists, is readable, and contains valid parameters.
-
License acceptance: Verify
LICENSE_ACCEPTED = TRUEor pass the command-line parameter. - Permissions: Check the installation directory and the account running each step.
-
Components: Review
SELECTED_FEATURESand any dependency errors. - Disk space: Check both the installation filesystem and temporary storage.
-
Instance initialization: Make sure initialization is performed as
gbasedbt, not root.
This order helps separate configuration problems from operating-system and instance-management issues.
Final Thoughts
Automating GBase Database deployment is not just about running ids_install -i silent. A reliable installation also depends on a valid response file, correct permissions, sufficient disk space, and proper separation between software installation and instance initialization.
When a silent installation fails, start with the response file and the installation logs before changing multiple settings at once. Identifying the first failing step is usually more effective than repeatedly rerunning the installer without knowing what went wrong.
