During a typical installation of GBase Database (GBase 8s), the installer asks you to select an expected user count:
1 - 1–100
2 - 101–500
3 - 501–1000
4 - 1000+
It's tempting to accept the default 1–100 and move on. For a quick test, that may be perfectly reasonable. But this option is worth understanding before you initialize an instance for a larger workload.
What Does the User Count Option Affect?
The expected user count helps the installer choose initial instance configuration parameters appropriate for the anticipated workload.
Depending on the installation script and configuration template, these settings may include resource limits related to concurrent connections and other instance resources.
In other words, you're giving the installer a rough indication of how many users the database is expected to serve. It is a sizing input, not a guarantee that the instance will support exactly that number of concurrent connections.
Important: The selected range should not be treated as a direct connection limit. Actual connection capacity depends on the resulting configuration, available system resources, workload, and other relevant limits.
Which User Count Should You Choose?
A simple rule of thumb can help:
-
Feature validation: The default
1–100range is generally a reasonable starting point. - Development and functional testing: Choose a range that reflects the expected test environment.
- Concurrency testing: Select a range based on the planned workload, then verify the resulting connection and resource settings.
- Larger deployments: Review the generated configuration and size the instance according to actual workload requirements rather than relying on the installer choice alone.
For example, if you're only validating SQL syntax or checking whether an application can connect, a small user-count range may be sufficient.
If you're preparing a concurrency test with hundreds of simulated users, accepting the default without checking the resulting configuration could leave the instance poorly suited to the test.
Don't Stop at the Installation Wizard
After the typical installation finishes, inspect the generated instance configuration to understand which values were selected.
Check the relevant resource and connection parameters, and confirm that they match your testing or deployment requirements. The exact parameters to review depend on the configuration produced by your GBase Database installation.
For production environments, also consider memory, CPU, storage performance, connection behavior, and workload characteristics. The user-count selection is only one part of database sizing.
Final Takeaway
The user-count option in the GBase Database (GBase 8s) typical installer is more than a cosmetic question. It helps guide the initial instance configuration based on the expected scale of use.
For quick feature validation, the default may be enough. For concurrency testing or larger deployments, choose the range deliberately and verify the resulting settings.
A useful installation habit: don't just ask what value the wizard wants. Ask what configuration that choice will produce.
