General Motors is modernizing its 30-year-old OnStar platform with an in-house personal AI assistant and a unified mobile app architecture launching in 2027.
The system introduces voice-controlled vehicle functions, integrated camera streaming, and safety recordings managed through encrypted user controls.
The new assistant will debut in the coming months on the 2027 Cadillac Lyriq electric model, with other vehicles to follow soon. At the same time, General Motors announced that a new mobile app will be released in 2027 that will connect and sync with the car's software.
The new app will replace both the current OnStar Guardian app that has been in operation since 2020, as well as the separate apps for the Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC brands.
What will the new assistant be able to do?
The digital assistant was created by the company itself to offer drivers and passengers an interactive experience.

Vehicle cameras will be connected to the system, allowing for live viewing and recording for safety purposes. Users will be able to set the connected cameras to automatically activate if the vehicle senses something is about to happen, record it and upload it to the OnStar app.
Additionally, drivers will be able to use their voice to control certain car functions, such as air conditioning, and ask questions about specific vehicle features.
What about data and privacy?
General Motors stressed that customers will have the ability to decide what data to share. As it clarified, the recordings will have time limits and be encrypted, while General Motors and OnStar will not have access to the recordings from the cameras.
