KEY TAKEAWAYS

• Intuitive ended 2025 with more than 11,100 da Vinci surgical systems installed, and customers performed over 3.2 million procedures on its platforms during the year.
• The most established healthcare robots work in operating rooms, pharmacies, logistics corridors and disinfection routines, while patient-facing care robots are mostly still pilots.
• A da Vinci 5 system costs roughly 1.8 to 2.5 million dollars plus 100,000 to 300,000 dollars a year in maintenance and instruments, which keeps adoption concentrated at high-volume centers.

Healthcare robots are no longer a future promise. In 2026 they are assisting in surgery, delivering medication and disinfecting rooms in hospitals around the world.

Walk through a large hospital today and the robots you meet are mostly doing jobs patients never see. They carry linen, dispense pills, scrub rooms with ultraviolet light and guide surgeons' instruments. A smaller group works directly with patients, from rehabilitation exoskeletons to therapy companions for dementia care. This tracker lays out the real deployments, the pilot projects and the limits, so you can tell which healthcare robots are genuinely at work in 2026 and which are still experiments.

Healthcare robots in the operating room

Surgical robots are the most mature medical robots in hospitals, and the clearest example is the da Vinci system from Intuitive. The surgeon sits at a console and operates robotic arms that hold wristed instruments inside the patient's body, with the system translating hand movements into smaller, more precise actions. Intuitive reports that surgeons performed over 3.2 million procedures on its platforms in 2025, and the company ended the year with more than 11,100 da Vinci systems installed at customer sites worldwide.

The newest platform, the da Vinci 5, adds a feature earlier systems lacked: force feedback that lets surgeons feel the tension on tissue as they operate. The first hospitals put it to work in 2026, with St Thomas' Hospital in London starting to use the force-feedback instruments across several specialties in October, and hospitals including Holland Hospital in Michigan, Surrey Memorial Hospital in Canada and Poole Hospital in England installing new systems during the year. In Romania, a public hospital in Bistrita County installed the country's first publicly funded da Vinci 5 the same month. The technology keeps getting faster to run too: Fiona Stanley Hospital in Australia became the first public hospital there to complete four robotic-assisted prostatectomies in a single operating list in October 2026, discharging patients as early as the next morning.

Honest framing matters here. With every da Vinci system the surgeon remains fully in control; the robot does not decide anything on its own. Robotic-assisted surgery is also expensive. Reported figures put a da Vinci 5 system between roughly 1.8 and 2.5 million dollars, with annual maintenance around 150,000 to 250,000 dollars plus the cost of single-use instruments, and economic reviews have generally found robotic surgery costs more overall than laparoscopic surgery when the purchase and maintenance are counted. Adoption therefore concentrates at high-volume surgical centers, and some hospitals now use leasing or per-procedure arrangements to lower the upfront cost.

Intuitive faces real competition for the first time. Medtronic's Hugo system, CMR Surgical's Versius and orthopedic platforms such as the Velys knee system are installed in hospitals across Europe and beyond, and St Thomas' reports a fleet of 13 surgical robots including two Hugo systems. For patients, the practical effect so far is narrower incisions, shorter stays and faster recovery in many procedures, but the robot is a tool in the surgeon's hands, not a substitute for one.

Delivery, pharmacy and disinfection robots: the quiet workhorses

Before robots touched patients, they moved materials. Autonomous delivery robots now run routine transport routes inside hospitals: medication, lab samples, linen, meals and sterile supplies. The Aethon TUG, one of the longest-running systems, navigates hospital corridors on its own, rides elevators and pulls carts; its maker reports more than 700 deployments globally. Diligent Robotics' Moxi goes one step further with a robotic arm on a mobile base, delivering medications and lab samples to nurse stations and patient rooms, with reported deployments in large US health systems including Ascension and Mayo Clinic. In September 2025, ST Engineering Aethon partnered with Oracle to connect its mobile robots directly to hospital inventory software, so pickup, delivery and stock updates happen in one loop.

Pharmacy robots dispense and verify medication with barcode checks that cut human error. Systems like the Omnicell XR2 central pharmacy robot hold tens of thousands of unit doses and feed the whole hospital, while the BD Pyxis MedStation secures medication at the point of care on nursing units and the Swisslog MedRover carries doses to the bedside. Analysts at 24MarketReports put the average price of a fully automated drug dispenser at around 50,000 dollars in 2025, with some 80,200 units shipped that year, a sign of how routine this automation has become. Analyst estimates from Future Market Insights put the wider hospital logistics and delivery robot market at 919 million dollars in 2026, growing toward nearly 7 billion by 2036.

Disinfection robots took off during the pandemic and never left. Xenex's LightStrike units use pulsed xenon ultraviolet light to disinfect entire hospital rooms in minutes; in January 2026 the LightStrike6 received Health Canada registration for healthcare facilities, building on the FDA's 2023 authorization of LightStrike+ as a whole-room microbial reduction device, and the company reports more than 700 units deployed across North America. Blue Ocean Robotics' UVD robots lead in Europe and Asia. Regulators treat these as Class II medical devices, which is part of why adoption favors validated systems over unapproved UV gadgets.

Robots that work directly with patients

The robots patients actually meet are concentrated in rehabilitation. Gait-training systems such as the Lokomat are the established reference in hospital physiotherapy, while wearable exoskeletons give patients with neurological conditions extra repetitions that therapists alone cannot supply. Ekso Bionics' EksoNR is cleared by the FDA for stroke, acquired brain injury, multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injury, and Cyberdyne's HAL suit, which reads bio-electrical signals from the patient's muscles, has expanded across Japanese hospitals. Wandercraft's Atalante X uses self-balancing technology so patients without trunk control can walk hands-free during therapy sessions. Analysts at Dataintelo value the rehabilitation exoskeleton market at 2.8 billion dollars in 2025, rising toward 8.9 billion by 2034, driven by aging populations and the shortage of rehabilitation professionals.

Costs here are the barrier. A clinic buys one device and schedules patients through it, so home use stays limited, though some vendors lease home systems at 3,200 to 4,800 dollars a month. The honest version: exoskeletons are clinical tools that amplify a physiotherapist, not something most patients take home.

Companion and therapy robots for older and vulnerable patients are the least mature category, but a few have real deployments. South Korea's government has subsidized more than 12,000 Hyodol companion dolls for elderly people living alone, where they give medication reminders and alert care workers in emergencies. Paro, the seal-shaped therapeutic robot, is sold widely for around 6,000 dollars. In Singapore, SingHealth Community Hospitals integrated a humanoid robot called Dexie into its inpatient dementia care program in 2026, leading structured exercise and cognitive stimulation sessions; during the pilot, 28 patients completed at least six therapy sessions each, with early reports of better patient wellbeing. A University of Twente pilot published in early 2026 tested a GPT-powered social robot answering patient questions in a hospital setting and found patients and caregivers cautiously accepted it, while flagging reliability and trust as open questions. These examples show where this category is: genuine pilots with measurable results, not yet routine care.

Medical robots examples: the 2026 deployment table

These robots in healthcare examples show one consistent pattern: machines take the repetitive, measurable tasks first, and patient-facing roles follow later.

Where healthcare robots are heading next

The clearest near-term movement is force feedback and data spreading through surgery. The da Vinci 5's tension-sensing instruments, already in use in London, give surgeons a sense they never had, and Intuitive's usage-based leasing model lowers the capital barrier for smaller hospitals. Expect more systems per hospital rather than one robot shared across departments.

The bigger question is whether humanoid robots will join clinical teams. China launched a formal national elderly-care robot pilot in June 2025, requiring companies to run trials of at least six months with a minimum of 200 robots deployed to 200 families, with companies including Fourier, Unitree and UBTech participating. This is a government-run experiment, not a product launch, and the outcomes will decide whether care facilities elsewhere follow. Separately, the GPT-powered social robot pilot at the University of Twente suggests conversational AI may reach patient communication before any robot walks the wards.

Three limits will decide the pace. The first is cost: multi-million-dollar surgical systems and five-figure service contracts keep robots at well-funded hospitals. The second is integration: robots only pay off when they connect to elevators, pharmacy software and electronic health records, which is why partnerships like Aethon and Oracle matter more than new hardware. The third is regulation and trust: disinfection robots needed FDA and Health Canada clearance to sell at scale, and the same clearance path will shape which care robots move past pilots.
