SpaceX and Tesla have formed independent committees to discuss a potential corporate merger following shareholder requests.
Read about the structural details of the committees and what factors remain under evaluation.
How the discussions started
The two companies have formed special committees with independent board members to review the potential deal, at the request of shareholders. Elon Musk and his brother, Kimbal Musk, are not participating in the discussions because they are considered insiders.
Tesla has seven independent directors, while SpaceX has six. Ira Ehrenpreis sits on the boards of both companies, while Tesla became a shareholder in SpaceX after an investment in xAI and subsequent acquisition.
The likely benefits and the attitude of shareholders
Elon Musk has said a partnership could bring benefits in advanced software development, chip design and robotics technology. Such a move could create a trillion-dollar company and give Musk greater control over Tesla's operations.
