SpaceX announced plans for Starlink Mobile, a US cellular carrier service aiming to compete with major telecom providers by early 2028.
The infrastructure proposal involves equipping existing satellite dish installations with small radio transmitters to provide cellular coverage, though analysts note significant regulatory and scaling challenges.
SpaceX is considering using existing satellite internet antennas already on homes, businesses and towers across the country to provide cellular coverage, according to company president Gwynne Shotwell. The plan would involve attaching small transmitters to existing antennas to provide cellular coverage. The company aims to launch the second generation of its Starlink Mobile service, which is designed for fifth-generation speeds, in early 2028.
CEO Elon Musk has previously said that the rooftop antennas have a clear view of the sky, allowing them to provide connectivity directly to mobile phones. Additionally, a reference to a mobile network service was found in the Starlink app code for Android devices.
The challenges and doubts of experts
Despite the company's plans, market analysts are skeptical about the venture. Mike Dano of Ookla notes that SpaceX will face questions about equipment placement rules and avoiding interference from specific transmitters.
