Some self-employed borrowers qualify on a profit and loss statement instead of a long run of bank statements. A CPA or tax preparer signs a P&L, and the lender uses the net income on it. That sounds like the bank statements drop out of the picture. In most published programs they don't.
This guide covers why P&L programs still ask for bank statements, what a few published program documents say about how deposits have to line up with the P&L, and how to check the gap before you submit. Why a P&L program still wants bank statements
A P&L is a summary someone prepared. Bank statements show the money that actually came in. Lenders put the two side by side to see whether the revenue on the P&L is backed by real deposits. If the P&L reports far more gross receipts than the accounts ever received, expect the underwriter to ask about that gap.
The comparison usually runs one way: deposits have to support the P&L's gross receipts (its top-line revenue), not its net income. The net income is what the lender qualifies on, once the deposits show the gross figure is believable.
What published program documents say
The thresholds and the number of statements differ from one document to the next.

What stands out:
- The test is usually deposits against gross receipts. Newfi's CPA P&L program sets an 85% floor using two months of business statements [1]. REMN and Luxury use a 75% floor [2][3]. Newfi's bank-statement P&L method uses a 10% variance instead [1].
- The statement period and the P&L period are tied together. Luxury, Silver Hill and Newfi's bank-statement method tie the P&L to the period the statements cover [1][3][4]. Newfi's CPA P&L program is the exception here: a 12-month P&L with only 2 recent months of statements [1].
- Which deposits count matters. Luxury's wording compares the P&L to "eligible deposits," and Newfi's to "allowable deposits" [1][3]. Transfers, refunds and other non-revenue deposits left in the total can make the support look stronger than it is.
- The wording leaves questions for the lender. Newfi's "within a 10% variance" doesn't say which figure the 10% is measured from [1]. Ask the lender how they calculate it rather than assuming.
A worked example (sample figures)
Sample figures for illustration only. Not a real borrower and not any lender's rule. The math shows how the ratio moves, not whether a file would be approved.
A sample borrower's CPA-prepared P&L shows $360,000 in gross receipts for the last 12 months, or $30,000 a month on average. The program in this example asks for two recent months of business statements.

Now put each average next to the P&L's $30,000 monthly gross:
- All deposits: $27,750 ÷ $30,000 = 92.5%
- After excluding the transfer and the refund: $26,000 ÷ $30,000 ≈ 86.7%
That's a gap of almost six points from two line items. Against an 85% floor like Newfi's CPA P&L program [1], the sample stays above it either way, but with much less room after exclusions. Against a tighter test, or with a few more transfers in the total, the answer could change. The lender decides which deposits count and how the ratio is figured.
How to check the P&L against deposits before submission
- Confirm the program's test. Find the ratio (85%, 75%, a 10% variance or something else), the number of statements, and whether the P&L must cover the same period as the statements.
- Line up the periods. Make sure the P&L dates and the statement months match what the program asks for. A 12-month P&L next to the wrong two months won't help.
- Total deposits month by month. Use every statement for the period, and check each one is complete. A missing page or month changes the total.
- Take out what isn't revenue. Transfers between the borrower's own accounts, refunds, returned items and loan proceeds can inflate deposits. See excluding transfers and refunds and business vs personal bank statements.
- Run the ratio both ways. Before and after exclusions, so you know how much room the file has.
- Ask early if it's close or short. If deposits fall short of the P&L, talk to the borrower and their CPA before submission. There may be revenue paid into an account you don't have, or the P&L may need another look. - Leave the decision to the lender. Present the totals and the records. Whether the P&L is accepted is decided under the lender's program.

Do I still need bank statements for a P&L loan?
In the program documents cited here, yes. Newfi's CPA P&L program asks for 2 recent months of business statements [1], REMN compares the P&L to deposits on the business statements [2], and Luxury and Silver Hill tie the P&L to the statement period [3][4]. Other programs may differ. Check yours.
How close do deposits have to be to the P&L?
It depends on the program. The documents cited here use an 85% floor [1], a 75% floor [2][3] or a 10% variance [1]. Ask the lender how the figure is calculated.
What if the deposits don't support the P&L?
Raise it with the borrower, their CPA and the lender before submission. How a shortfall is treated is up to the program and the underwriter.
