Global authority does not automatically translate into local authority in AI search. That is the central finding of Search Engine Land contributor Motoko Hunt's October 13, 2026 analysis, which argues that organizations need to make market-relevant evidence visible and interpretable for AI search systems. Her local E-E-A-T framework for AI search provides a practical way to assess whether global messaging is supported by credible local representation.
The issue matters whenever a business serves more than one market. A strong global brand narrative can coexist with local pages that do not clearly show which claims apply in a given country or market, what evidence supports those claims, or who is responsible for maintaining that evidence. In an AI-search context, that gap can make local expertise harder for an engine to surface.
Hunt's framework is aimed at global enterprises, but its core discipline is relevant to any organization with market-specific pages, local offerings, or regionally distinct expertise. The goal is not to replace global consistency. It is to ensure that consistency does not obscure the local evidence that makes a claim relevant.
The five-step local E-E-A-T audit
The audit begins with applicability. Teams should identify which claims, proof points, and evidence genuinely apply in each market. A statement that is accurate globally may not be the most relevant evidence for every local audience. The first step therefore separates broad messaging from market-specific applicability.
The next step is to compare global and local representations. This means examining where global messaging and local pages align, and where they diverge. A divergence is not automatically an error. It can reveal that a local page needs more relevant context, or that the global claim needs clearer boundaries.
| Audit focus | Global representation | Local representation | What the audit checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claims and evidence | Global messaging and authority | Market-relevant claims and proof | Which evidence applies in each market |
| Page review | Global messaging | Local pages | Where representations align or diverge |
| AI search assessment | Broad expertise signals | Local expertise and evidence | What AI prompts surface for a market |
The third step turns the review into an evidence map. For priority claims, Hunt recommends recording the market, the supporting proof, its location, and its owner. This is a useful distinction because a claim without identified proof is difficult to validate, while proof without a clear location may be difficult for users and AI systems to find. Naming an owner also gives the organization a clear point of responsibility when evidence changes or needs review.
The fourth step is to test AI engine understanding. Rather than assuming that a local page communicates the intended expertise, the framework calls for evaluating how prompts surface local expertise and evidence. This is where the audit connects page representation with actual AI-search behavior. The task is to see whether market-specific information can be recognized in the way the organization expects.
Finally, teams create a remediation plan. Hunt's framework calls for prioritizing actions, assigning owners, and setting a schedule. This converts a content and evidence review into an operational plan instead of leaving it as a list of observations.
A practical checklist for applying the five steps is:
- List priority claims and determine the markets where each one applies.
- Review global messaging alongside the relevant local pages for differences in representation.
- Record the market, proof, location, and owner for each priority claim in an evidence map.
- Use relevant AI prompts to assess whether local expertise and supporting evidence are surfaced.
- Prioritize the gaps found, assign an owner to each action, and set a review schedule.
What this means for local AI visibility
The framework changes the question from "Do we have authority?" to "Can local authority be understood from the evidence we present?" That distinction is important for businesses that rely on one central brand presence while addressing multiple markets. A global reputation may remain valuable, but Hunt's analysis cautions against treating it as an automatic substitute for local relevance.
It also encourages a more disciplined use of AI-search testing. Prompts should not be treated as a one-time demonstration of visibility. Within this framework, they are a way to evaluate whether local expertise and evidence are being surfaced. If the results do not reflect the organization's intended local representation, the evidence map and representation review provide a structured place to investigate why.
The available framework does not prescribe a specific software product or set of platforms. Its tooling is primarily methodological: market-by-market claim reviews, an evidence map, prompt-based testing of AI engines, and a remediation plan with named ownership. That makes the approach adaptable, while also placing responsibility on teams to define their own priority claims and markets.
For businesses, the practical value is clarity. Rather than trying to make every page say the same thing, teams can preserve consistent global messaging while checking that each local market has relevant, supportable evidence. The result is a more focused way to identify gaps before they become a visibility problem in AI search.
If your business depends on being discovered in specific markets, local evidence should be tested as carefully as global brand messaging. GEO Search Leads can help turn this framework into a practical review of your pages, priority claims, and AI-search presence through an AI search visibility audit for local markets. Use the findings to focus content work on evidence gaps that affect discoverability, rather than relying on broad authority alone. Start an AI visibility audit today.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a local E-E-A-T audit for AI search?
A local E-E-A-T audit is a market-by-market review of claims, supporting evidence, local page representation, and how AI prompts surface local expertise. Hunt's framework uses five steps: define applicability, compare representations, map evidence, test AI understanding, and plan remediation.
Why is global authority not enough for local AI search visibility?
Search Engine Land's analysis states that global authority does not automatically confer local authority in AI search. AI systems need market-relevant evidence that is visible and interpretable for the local context.
What should an evidence map include?
For each priority claim, the framework calls for an evidence map that records the market, the proof supporting the claim, the location of that proof, and its owner.
How does the framework test AI engine understanding?
It evaluates how AI prompts surface local expertise and evidence. The purpose is to assess whether AI-search results reflect the intended market-specific representation.
Conclusion
Hunt's five-step framework offers a clear response to the local AI-search challenge: global consistency should be paired with evidence that is applicable, visible, and understandable in each market. Reviewing claims, local representations, evidence, AI prompt results, and remediation ownership gives organizations a practical basis for strengthening local authority without abandoning their global message.
