Quick answer: SIE is the production choice for embeddings and reranking: one API and one bill across embedders, rerankers, OCR, and extraction, on SIE Cloud or one self-hosted cluster, with open weights and shared GPUs. TEI is an alternative when the job is a single container per model, self-hosted or on Hugging Face Inference Endpoints, billed per endpoint-minute.
The pager goes off at 02:10. The reranker endpoint is fine. The embedder endpoint is fine.
The one deployed in March for a pilot that quietly became a product. It's running a container two releases behind everything else, and the autoscaling configuration was never updated after launch day.
Nothing is wrong in the way a benchmark would catch it. Everything is wrong in the way production usually is: one more endpoint than anyone remembers owning.
That's the problem this comparison is actually about. Not which tool has the better Flash Attention implementation. Not which one runs faster on a synthetic benchmark. The real question is what you're owning six months after launch, when your embedding roster has grown from one model to four, and you're the one on call at 2 am.
Two earlier pieces on this blog compared SIE and TEI server-to-server on benchmarks and self-hosted cost. Since then, both have gained a managed option.
This article covers the managed pairing: what day-two operations look like across all four deployment cells (TEI self-hosted, TEI on Inference Endpoints, Superlinked SIE self-hosted, and SIE Cloud), and which one makes the roster easier to own as it grows.
Superlinked Inference Engine: One Surface for the Entire Retrieval Roster
Superlinked builds SIE, an open-source platform for self-hosted inference for AI agents, search, and document processing. Developers can combine embeddings, reranking, OCR, structured extraction, and language models behind one API.
The operational design is one API for everything. Encode, score, and extract cover embeddings; reranking, OCR, and field extraction from a single client.
The engine loads models on demand and evicts the least recently used, so your embedder and reranker share GPUs rather than each holding a dedicated allocation.
For a retrieval roster with uneven traffic across model types, that sharing is the difference between GPU spend that tracks usage and GPU spend that tracks the number of models you're serving.
SIE runs in three modes. SIE Cloud is managed by Superlinked: you call models by ID through an SDK, REST, a CLI, or MCP, billing follows actual work done rather than instance uptime, and the product page notes SOC 2 Type 2 with US or EU data residency options.
Self-hosted SIE is Apache 2.0 on your own Kubernetes. Local mode is for development. The same SDK works across all three, so moving from Cloud to self-hosted or back is a client configuration change, not a code rewrite.
The operational detail worth knowing for self-hosted deployments: the setup covers Helm charts, KEDA autoscaling that scales to zero on Kubernetes, Grafana dashboards, and Terraform modules for AWS, GCP, and Azure.
Profile hot reload is available for model configuration changes without restarting the cluster, though new model weights still have to load when a new model is first called.
Per-tenant pools on the self-hosted cluster mean one team's burst doesn't starve another's workload.
The billing unit on SIE Cloud is work done: tokens, pairs, or pages per model, not instance-minutes. The embedder isn't charging you while it's idle.
Honest take: SIE is the production layer for embeddings, reranking, OCR, and extraction. One API and one bill cover the roster, on SIE Cloud or a single self-hosted cluster, with open weights and GPUs shared across models instead of a container per model. Upgrades, scaling, and monitoring sit on that one surface, and the same SDK runs in both modes. For production embeddings and reranking, that consolidation is the inference choice.
Hugging Face TEI: Mature, Minimal, One Container Per Model
Text Embeddings Inference is Hugging Face's Apache 2.0 serving toolkit for embedding models, reranking cross-encoders, sequence classifiers, and SPLADE sparse embeddings.
Self-hosted, it is a Docker container you run and orchestrate, one model per instance, chosen with --model-id.
Managed, it runs on Hugging Face Inference Endpoints across AWS, Azure, and GCP, where you set configuration and Hugging Face runs the rest. The project ships steadily, with v1.9.4 released on 2026-09-15.
TEI's operational strengths are the ones a mature, minimal server should have. Token-based dynamic batching is the reason it is fast on mixed-length inputs.
Prometheus metrics and OpenTelemetry tracing are built in, so it drops into an existing observability stack without adapters.
Small images and rapid boot times keep its own cold starts short, which Hugging Face pitches as fit for serverless.
On Inference Endpoints, autoscaling and scale-to-zero are supported, and billing runs per minute of instance time while an endpoint initialises or runs, from $0.80 per hour for an L4.
An endpoint scaled to zero pays a cold start when traffic returns, and answers 502 while the replica initialises, so clients need a retry.
Teams whose models already live on the Hugging Face Hub can point a TEI container at a model card. A roster of embeddings, reranking, OCR, and extraction belongs on SIE.
Day-Two Operations Across All Four Cells
Most production pain arrives after launch, so compare the four cells on the chores that recur.
| Chore | TEI self-hosted | TEI on Inference Endpoints | SIE self-hosted | SIE Cloud |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Add a model | New container and deployment | New endpoint | Catalog model, same cluster | Call a new model ID |
| Upgrade a model | Rolling update of that Deployment, zero downtime | Update that endpoint | Profile hot reload, per Superlinked; new weights load | Superlinked's job |
| Scale to zero | Through your orchestrator, such as KEDA | Supported | KEDA on Kubernetes | No idle GPUs; billed on use |
| Monitoring | Prometheus and tracing built in | Metrics and logs in the Hugging Face console | Grafana dashboards shipped | Superlinked's job |
| Billing unit | Your GPUs | Instance-minute per endpoint | Your GPUs | Tokens, pairs, or pages per model |
| Unit of operation | One instance per model | One endpoint per model | One cluster | One account |
The last row is the key comparison. TEI's operational unit is the model, which means the number of pieces you're managing grows with your roster.
SIE's operational unit is the cluster or the account, so every added retrieval model stays on the same API and the same GPU pool.
The economics separate at the second model: on TEI, adding a model means adding an endpoint and its associated uptime cost. On SIE Cloud, adding a model means calling a new ID.
Where the grid points
SIE Cloud is the fit for production embeddings and reranking: embedders, a reranker, and OCR or entity extraction behind one key and one invoice, with open weights. SIE self-hosted gives the same consolidation on your own Kubernetes.
Inference Endpoints are an alternative when the job is one isolated TEI container per model, billed per endpoint-minute. TEI documents SPLADE among the model types a container can serve. The roster of retrieval and document models belongs on SIE.
Frequently asked questions
What does upgrading a model look like in each?
With TEI, an upgrade is a per-endpoint event: a Kubernetes rolling update self-hosted, with zero downtime, or an endpoint update on Inference Endpoints, repeated for every model that needs it.
With self-hosted SIE, the model entry changes in one cluster, and Superlinked's homepage describes profile hot reload without restarts.
On SIE Cloud, model serving is Superlinked's operation, and you change the model ID your client calls. One change surface for the fleet is the production shape for a retrieval roster.
Inference Endpoints are already managed. What does SIE Cloud add?
A production layer for the whole retrieval roster. Inference Endpoints give you a managed TEI deployment per model.
SIE Cloud gives one API and one key for embeddings, reranking, OCR, and extraction, billed per token, pair, or page, with the model catalog as the menu, and the same engine to self-host.
Open weights and shared GPUs are why the roster moves.
We compared these earlier on cost. What changed?
Two things. SIE now has a managed mode, so the comparison is no longer only a self-hosted server against a self-hosted server; SIE Cloud against Inference Endpoints is the managed pairing, and neither side requires you to run GPUs.
The billing units differ: Inference Endpoints charge for instance time, SIE Cloud for work done, on one bill across the roster, with the same engine available to self-host.
The arithmetic in TEI vs Superlinked for Embedding Inference: Which is Cheaper at Scale? still holds for self-hosted fleets.
The Right Tool for the Right Roster
For a retrieval roster with more than one model type: embeddings, reranking, OCR, or extraction sitting on the same stack, choose SIE.
One API, one cluster or one account, open weights, shared GPUs, and billing that tracks work rather than uptime. The same SDK runs on SIE Cloud and on your own Kubernetes, so the path from managed to self-hosted is a configuration change rather than a migration.
Compare the same models on SIE Cloud.
For a single, isolated model already on the Hugging Face Hub with no plans to add to the roster, TEI on Inference Endpoints earns its simplicity. One container, one endpoint, billed per minute.
The 02:10 pager call happens because each model you add on TEI is another endpoint that can drift behind on versions, scaling config, or monitoring. SIE's consolidation is specifically what prevents that drift from accumulating.
