Every so often, Odin refuses to start a flash until you feed it something called a PIT file. The error messages are cryptic, the forums are full of contradictory advice, and downloading random PIT files from file mirrors is a good way to brick a phone. Here's what a PIT actually is, when you genuinely need one, and when you should walk away from a thread telling you to use it.
PIT = Partition Information Table
Your Galaxy phone's internal storage is divided into partitions: one for the bootloader, one for the modem, one for the system, one for userdata, and so on. The PIT (Partition Information Table) is a small file that describes that layout — which partitions exist, where each starts, how big each is, and which blocks belong to which.
Odin reads the PIT from the phone itself at the start of a flash (that's the "SetupConnection" step succeeding). It only asks YOU for a PIT file when something is wrong: the phone's PIT is corrupted, the partitions were damaged, or the flash you're attempting expects a different partition layout than the phone currently has.
When Odin asks for a PIT: the honest scenarios
Scenario 1: The phone's PIT is genuinely corrupted. This happens after a failed flash that died mid-write, or after flashing firmware meant for a different storage variant (e.g. flashing a 128 GB model's firmware onto a 64 GB model). Odin can't read the layout from the phone, so it asks you to supply one. This is the legitimate use case.
Scenario 2: Re-partitioning is checked. If you (or a guide you're following) ticked the "Re-Partition" checkbox in Odin, Odin requires a PIT to rebuild the partition table. Re-Partition is almost never needed for a standard stock flash, and ticking it with the wrong PIT is one of the classic ways people brick phones. If you're just reinstalling stock firmware, Re-Partition should be OFF and you should not need a PIT at all.
Scenario 3: A guide told you to use one. Many old forum threads treat a PIT file as a magic fix for errors like FAIL (Auth) or stuck SetupConnection. It isn't. If the phone's PIT is readable, adding an external PIT changes nothing except the risk profile. Don't add a PIT to fix an error it doesn't cause.
Where a correct PIT comes from
If you're genuinely in Scenario 1, the correct PIT must match your EXACT model number and storage variant — not just the model family. A PIT from a Galaxy S22 128 GB is not interchangeable with one from an S22 256 GB, even though the model number SM-S901B looks the same on paper. Using the wrong PIT with Re-Partition checked writes the wrong partition boundaries and can make the phone unbootable at the bootloader level, which no re-flash fixes.
Odin can also dump the phone's own PIT back to your PC when the phone is healthy, which is the safest source — but that only works before things go wrong, so it's more of a technician's precaution than a rescue method.
The safe default
For 95% of users flashing stock firmware, the rule is simple: if Odin asks for a PIT and you didn't tick Re-Partition, stop and figure out why instead of hunting down a PIT file. Check your cable, your USB port, your Odin version, and whether the firmware matches your exact model. The PIT prompt is usually a symptom of something simpler — and feeding it a wrong PIT turns a fixable problem into a dead phone.
