Flashing stock firmware is one of the safest ways to fix a misbehaving Galaxy phone, but only if your data survives the process. A full flash wipes the internal storage, and the restore only works if the backup was made before the flash, not after. The ten minutes a backup takes are the cheapest insurance in the whole process.
What flashing actually erases
A standard Odin flash with the CSC file (not HOME_CSC) performs a factory reset as part of the install. That means photos, videos, downloaded files, app data, saved Wi-Fi networks, call history, and messages stored on the phone all go away. The SIM card and the microSD card are not wiped, but anything on internal storage is. If you flash with HOME_CSC, your data is meant to stay, yet plenty of flashes still go wrong partway through and end in a forced wipe. Treat every flash as a full wipe, and you will never lose anything to a surprise.
The three things worth saving
First, your files: photos, videos, documents, and anything in the Downloads folder. Second, your app setup: which apps you had, your accounts inside them, and chat histories that do not sync to a cloud. Third, your phone settings: Wi-Fi passwords, home screen layout, and accessibility options. A good backup covers all three, and the methods below stack nicely if you use two of them together.
Method 1: Smart Switch on a computer
Smart Switch is Samsung's own backup tool, and it is the most complete option. Install it on a Windows PC or a Mac, connect the phone with a USB cable, and choose Backup. It copies contacts, messages, call logs, photos, videos, music, documents, app lists, and most settings into a single backup file on the computer. When the flash is done, connect the phone again and choose Restore. One detail people miss: Smart Switch backs up the apps themselves only if the backup includes them, and some apps with their own login (banking apps, authenticators) still need to be signed into again. Move authenticator codes to a second device before you flash, because a backup will not save those.
Method 2: Samsung Cloud and Google backup
If you do not have a computer nearby, the built-in cloud backups cover most of the same ground. On the phone, open Settings, then Accounts and backup, and check that both Samsung Cloud and Google One backup are switched on. Samsung Cloud handles call logs, messages, contacts, calendar entries, and settings. Google's backup covers app data for apps that support it, plus Wi-Fi passwords and call history. Run a manual backup now rather than trusting the last automatic one, and wait until it reports completion. Cloud restore works well, but it needs a stable Wi-Fi connection and it is slower than a cable restore, so plan for that.
Method 3: a manual copy of the files that matter
Cloud and Smart Switch backups are good, but a manual copy is the belt to go with the braces. Plug the phone into a computer, copy the DCIM, Pictures, Downloads, and Documents folders to a folder on the computer, and confirm the copy by opening a few files. If the phone has a microSD card, copy its contents too, since a card can be removed before flashing and kept somewhere safe. This manual copy is also the fastest way to check that your photos really exist in two places before you wipe the phone.
After the flash: restore in the right order
Once the phone boots into the fresh firmware, sign into the same Samsung and Google accounts you used for the backup, connect to Wi-Fi, and let the restore run before installing anything new. Restore Smart Switch or cloud backup first, then check that photos, messages, and contacts are back. Only then reinstall the apps that need fresh logins, and re-register authenticator apps from their own recovery codes. Flashing first and hunting for a backup afterwards is how data loss happens, so keep the order strict.
The one mistake that costs people their photos
The most common data-loss story is not a failed flash. It is a phone that was backed up to a computer that later turned out to hold a backup from a different phone, or a cloud backup that had silently stopped syncing months earlier. Before you flash, open the backup and verify it: check the date, the size, and a few files inside it. A backup you have not verified is a guess, not a backup.
A clean flash with a verified backup is a routine job. Do the backup first, check it, and then flash with confidence. For the firmware itself, SamFware keeps official stock ROMs organised by model and region, and the guides on SamFware walk through the flash step by step.
