Installing SafeLine WAF on a Raspberry Pi begins with checking compatibility, not copying an installation command. The official deployment guide lists Linux, x86_64 or arm64 architecture, Docker 20.10.14 or newer, Docker Compose 2.0.0 or newer, at least one CPU core, 1 GB of memory, 5 GB of disk space, and SSSE3 as requirements (official deployment guide). A Raspberry Pi may satisfy some of these conditions, but the exact model, operating system, CPU capabilities, and available storage still need to be verified.
There is also an important licensing limitation in the official documentation: an ARM deployment requires a Pro license, and the Personal Edition is not supported on ARM (official deployment guide). Therefore, treat this as a compatibility and deployment checklist for an ARM64 Raspberry Pi rather than an unconditional promise that every Pi can run SafeLine.
1. Check the Raspberry Pi before installing
Use the following commands from the official guide to inspect the host:
uname -m
docker version
docker compose version
cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep "processor"
free -h
df -h
lscpu | grep ssse3
The first command should confirm an architecture supported by the guide. Check that Docker and Docker Compose meet the documented minimum versions, that memory and disk capacity are available, and that the CPU check produces the required result. If the device is not arm64, or if the CPU requirement is absent, stop and resolve that issue before proceeding.
2. Prepare the ARM deployment files
The documented manual deployment creates a working directory, downloads the Compose file, and writes environment variables:
mkdir -p "/data/safeline"
cd "/data/safeline"
wget "https://waf.chaitin.com/release/latest/compose.yaml"
touch ".env"
Set SAFELINE_DIR=/data/safeline, choose an administrator port with MGT_PORT=9443, provide a PostgreSQL initialization password, and set the remaining values described in the official guide. For an ARM server, the guide specifically instructs you to set:
ARCH_SUFFIX=-arm
Keep the directory and environment values consistent. SafeLine writes its configuration and data to the selected directory, which is why the documentation requires at least 5 GB of disk space (official deployment guide).
3. Start the service and open the console
After the Compose file and .env file are ready, launch the service:
docker compose up -d
The official guide says startup may take several minutes. When it is running, open https://<safeline-ip>:9443/ in a browser. Generate the initial administrator credentials with:
docker exec safeline-mgt resetadmin
Save the displayed username and password, then use them to sign in to the web console (official deployment guide).
4. Add the application behind the Raspberry Pi
SafeLine operates as an HTTP/HTTPS reverse proxy. In the Web Admin Console, open Applications, select Add Application, and enter the application domain, listening port, SSL setting when applicable, and the upstream address of the real application. Then resolve the domain to the Raspberry Pi’s SafeLine address so requests pass through the WAF (official application guide).
SafeLine’s documented purpose is to filter, monitor, and block malicious HTTP/S traffic, with protections that include web attacks and rate limiting (official introduction). Test the protected application carefully after configuration and review the attack list in the console when a request is blocked.
How do I know whether my Raspberry Pi is suitable?
Confirm Linux, arm64, Docker and Compose versions, available memory and disk, and the documented CPU requirement. Also account for the ARM licensing requirement before investing time in deployment.
Can I use the automated installer on ARM?
The official deployment page documents an automated installer and a manual Compose deployment, but ARM-specific configuration is explicitly described under the manual environment setup. For a Raspberry Pi, use the documented ARM settings and verify the result against the current guide.
Where does SafeLine sit in my network?
It sits in front of the application as a reverse proxy. The application’s domain should resolve to the SafeLine host, while SafeLine forwards accepted traffic to the configured upstream.
What should I do if the installation fails?
Recheck architecture, Docker versions, Compose versions, disk space, memory, CPU requirements, the ARCH_SUFFIX=-arm setting, and the generated administrator credentials. Then consult the official deployment documentation for installation issues.
If your Raspberry Pi passes the checklist, compare the result with the current documentation and share your deployment experience with the community. Project: https://github.com/chaitin/SafeLine Documentation: https://docs.waf.chaitin.com/en/GetStarted/Deploy
