Globalstar secured FCC approval for its C-3 satellite constellation, featuring 48 low-Earth orbiting satellites designed to improve mobile connectivity and indoor signal performance starting in 2027.
The Federal Communications Commission approval was granted on October 8, the company announced Monday. Globalstar CEO Paul Jacobs said the move will enable next-generation services with greater capacity and better performance.
The new system, known as C-3, was initially announced after a $1 billion investment by Apple. The existing Globalstar connection has been used since late 2022 for the emergency satellite communications feature of iPhone 14 and newer models.
Better signal indoors
The new network aims to improve signal quality, making connectivity possible even inside buildings or cars. The plan includes 48 satellites in low Earth orbit, as well as up to six spare satellites in orbit, bringing the total to 54.

The change of ownership and Amazon's plans
Earlier this year, Apple decided to sell its stake in Globalstar, as Amazon moves forward with its acquisition of the company.
Despite the change in ownership, both Apple and Amazon remain committed to serving current and future iPhone and Apple Watch models with satellite capabilities. Amazon also plans to expand Globalstar's operations by working with mobile carriers to bring satellite access to Android devices.
