Comparing motion detection specifications across popular video doorbell hardware reveals notable differences.
Ring targets a 30-foot maximum range, while eufy and Arlo specify shorter distances.
A look at how different sensor technologies handle detection limits.
According to manufacturers, Ring says the typical maximum motion detection distance for its devices is about 9 feet, although larger objects, like a car, can trigger an alert from further away. However, other companies have much shorter ranges. eufy says its doorbell camera can detect horizontal motion up to 1,5 feet and vertical motion up to 5 feet. Arlo gives a maximum range of 4,5 feet for the second-generation model and nearly 4 feet for the Essential models, while TELUS notes that its sensor works best at up to 2,4 feet.
How does detection work and what difficulties exist?
In addition to distance, the mode of operation also plays a role. TELUS says that even at maximum sensitivity, its sensor requires continuous movement for seven seconds or more to capture video. At the same time, the cameras use different detection technologies, such as heat sensors or video frame comparison systems, while some models combine image analysis with heat sensors.
A longer distance isn't always desirable, especially if your home is near a busy road. Factors like moving trees, sunlight, reflections, and shadows can create unwanted alerts. For wireless devices, constantly detecting motion in busy areas also uses more battery, as Google points out for its Nest Doorbell model.

Settings and usage costs
To reduce false alerts, users can set specific monitoring areas. Ring, for example, recommends placing its devices 4 feet (1,2 meters) off the ground and allows for up to three customizable motion zones per device.
Finally, the user experience can vary depending on subscriptions. Ring offers free access to receive and respond to motion alerts, but viewing saved videos and smart alerts that distinguish people, vehicles, and packages require a subscription to the Ring Protect service.
