Amazon is funding a 960-megawatt nuclear plant in Indiana utilizing 12 small modular reactors from X-energy to power its data centers and the public grid, marking a major milestone in tech-backed nuclear infrastructure development.
The plant will be built on the site of a demolished coal plant south of the city of Terre Haute and will feature 12 small nuclear reactors supplied by X-energy. The plant will be operated by American Electric Power, with Amazon as the first customer to purchase electricity from it.
Collaboration and future plans
This is the second commercial deal between the two companies and is three times larger than the first one announced two years ago. In October 2024, Amazon led a $700 million funding round for X-energy.
The two companies plan to build a total of 5 gigawatts of new nuclear capacity in the United States by 2039. X-energy went public on the Nasdaq in April, with a price per share set at $23. News of the deal temporarily sent the company's stock up about 10% in premarket trading, though it had fallen slightly below 2% by the time the news was published.

The challenges of the schedule
The project schedule depends on whether X-energy can successfully complete its first nuclear power plant at a Dow Chemical facility in Texas, where four reactors are planned to be built to provide heat and electricity.
The site is facing a lawsuit from the state of Texas, which accuses it of repeated violations of water and solid waste regulations. Work has not yet begun on the site, while the related construction permit is in the final stages of evaluation by the United States nuclear regulatory authority.
