Markdown makes technical documents easy to maintain. The source is plain text, headings and lists stay readable, and changes are simple to review. But when a document includes equations, matrices, or piecewise functions, producing a polished PDF can still mean switching tools and fixing layout by hand.
One lightweight approach is to keep the document in Markdown and add LaTeX-style notation where mathematical typesetting is needed. The browser-based markdown2pdf editor allows to write or paste Markdown, inspect a live preview, select a PDF theme, and export.
Add math without moving the document into a .tex project
Inline notation can live in the same sentence as the explanation:
The energy relation is $E = mc^2$.
For a separate equation, use display delimiters:
$$
\frac{d}{dx}\left(x^n\right) = nx^{n-1}
$$
The editor also recognizes \(...\) for inline math and \[...\] for display math. This lets a writer keep prose, Markdown structure, and common formulas in one source file.
More than isolated equations
Technical documents often need a sequence of steps, not just a single formula. Multiline aligned blocks can show a derivation:
$$
\begin{aligned}
f(x) &= x^2 + 2x + 1 \\
&= (x + 1)^2
\end{aligned}
$$
The renderer also supports matrix, bmatrix, and pmatrix environments, along with cases for piecewise definitions. These are useful for describing transformations, displaying model inputs, or documenting conditional functions.
Common commands such as \frac, \tfrac, \text, \operatorname, \le, and \ge are supported, with normalization for some familiar variants. The math rendering is based on Matplotlib MathText, which implements a practical subset of LaTeX. It is not a full TeX compiler: specialized packages, custom macros, and some advanced commands may not render. Check those expressions in the preview before relying on the exported PDF.
Why the preview matters
An equation can be syntactically valid but still be too wide, use an unsupported command, or look awkward next to the surrounding text. A live preview makes those problems visible while the source is easy to edit.
In this workflow, supported equations are rendered to images for the preview and PDF. That keeps their appearance consistent in the exported document, but the equation itself is not editable text in the PDF. Keep the Markdown source as the editable copy.
The preview also covers the rest of the document: headings, tables, images, code, and supported Mermaid flowcharts. That makes it possible to check the document as a whole instead of testing formulas in isolation.
Choose a PDF style after the content is ready
The editor includes 16 themes, from Paper and GitHub to Academic, Midnight, Nord, and Corporate. A theme changes the presentation without requiring a separate CSS setup or a second copy of the content. The same Markdown can become a technical handout, a research draft, or a report simply by choosing a different style.
The basic workflow is:
- Write or paste Markdown.
- Add supported LaTeX-style formulas.
- Inspect the prose, equations, tables, and other content in the preview.
- Select a theme.
- Export the PDF.
The tool is free to use, requires no account or local installation, and saves drafts in the browser. Document content is sent to the service to generate previews and PDFs, then processed in memory rather than stored on the server.
Markdown with math, without a full TeX toolchain
Markdown and LaTeX are built for different jobs. Markdown is convenient for structuring prose and technical notes. A full TeX toolchain is better suited to publications that depend on specialized packages, extensive macros, or a complete LaTeX document workflow.
A Markdown editor with LaTeX-style math support fits between those options. It keeps the document easy to maintain while adding common scientific notation and PDF export. For notes, reports, technical documentation, and early research drafts, that can remove a formatting step without pretending to replace a full TeX environment.
