As developers, we spend a lot of time building projects. But when it comes to explaining those projects to others, things can get surprisingly difficult.
I'm talking about README files.
A README is often the first thing someone sees when they visit your GitHub repository. It explains what your project does, how to install it, how to use it, and why someone might want to contribute.
But creating a README that is both informative and visually appealing? That's a different story.
The Problem
When I started creating README files for my own projects, I wanted them to look professional and be easy to understand.
I explored different websites and tools to make the process easier. AI tools could help generate content, and Markdown editors made writing and previewing easier.
However, I still felt that the overall workflow could be better.
I wanted a dedicated desktop application where I could work with Markdown more comfortably without constantly switching between different tools.
That made me think:
What if I built a tool to make working with Markdown documentation a better experience?
Turning an Idea Into a Project
Instead of just thinking about it, I started building VisualMark Studio (VMS).
VMS is an open-source desktop application built with Electron, designed to make working with Markdown more convenient.
My goal wasn't simply to create another editor. I wanted to build something useful for developers who regularly write documentation, create GitHub README files, or work with Markdown.
Building it has been a learning experience in itself. Beyond implementing features, I've had to deal with bugs, improve the user experience, test the application, and keep refining the project.
It's a reminder that building software isn't just about making something work. It's also about making it useful and reliable.
What Makes VisualMark Studio Different?
A few things matter to me about this project:
- Desktop experience: A dedicated Electron application for working with Markdown.
- Automatic updates: This has been part of VMS since version 1.0.0, allowing the application to update without users having to download it again from the repository for every release.
- Free and open source: VMS is free, and my commitment is to keep it that way.
- Community-driven improvement: The source code is publicly available, and developers can explore the project, report issues, and contribute.
I'm continuing to improve the application, and I know there is still room to make it better.
The Journey Doesn't End Here
One thing I've learned from building VMS is that solving a problem you personally experience is a great starting point. But understanding how other developers experience that same problem is equally important.
That's why I'd like to hear from the DEV Community.
I'd love to know:
- Do you find creating and maintaining GitHub README files difficult?
- Do you prefer online Markdown tools, VS Code, or dedicated desktop applications?
- What features would make your Markdown documentation workflow easier?
I'd genuinely appreciate your thoughts, suggestions, and constructive criticism.
Check Out VisualMark Studio
GitHub repository: VisualMark Studio
If you want to use the VisualMark Studio, you can get a pre-built V1.1.4 is available in the repo
And also there is a major update is coming to VisualMark Studio which includes some quality updates, safety & security upgrade and new features in few days. I hope guys like it.
And this my demo website for the VisualMark Studio Web,still work in progress stage.
If you're interested in the project, feel free to explore the source code, try the application, or share your feedback.
Thanks for reading!
