Technical articles frequently contain code blocks that demonstrate how to write Markdown image syntax. When publication asset scanners parse these raw files without checking context, they treat literal examples like hero.jpg as real external dependencies. This breaks pipelines when the example files do not exist on disk.
Quick solution:
Strip fenced and inline code blocks before scanning the document body for image references.
def extract_image_references(content):
cleaned_content = strip_code_blocks(content)
return find_markdown_images(cleaned_content)
Prerequisites include a robust CommonMark parser capable of reliably identifying fenced and inline code boundaries, matching the specifications outlined by CommonMark. Without block awareness, naive regular expressions match image tags anywhere in the file.
Isolating Literal Code Examples
Scanners must differentiate between rendered content and code examples. If an author writes an article explaining image syntax, the parser should ignore everything inside a fenced or inline code region. Reusing existing code-fence stripping functions before image discovery ensures that editorial examples remain purely illustrative.
During Engineering High Intent Activity Landing Pages, teams often share short snippets of configuration or markup. Ensuring these snippets do not trigger external fetches keeps build pipelines green and predictable.
Handling Conflicting Source Archives
Asset discovery also intersects with archive storage. When multiple source files reference assets with identical filenames but different contents, naive storage systems overwrite existing files or fail outright. Applying a deterministic content-hash suffix to archive paths solves this collision problem. Existing archives are preserved, identical retries safely reuse their destination, and unexpected mutations fail cleanly.
Implementation Verification Checklist
- Run the updated asset scanner against a test document containing both rendered images and literal image examples inside code blocks.
- Verify that actual rendered images pass through raster, provenance, and uniqueness gates successfully.
- Confirm that conflicting source archives receive a deterministic content-hash suffix without overwriting previous versions.
- Check that identical retries reuse their existing destination without triggering errors.
- Validate that unexpected changed destinations fail safely before publishing.
Conclusion
Separating literal code examples from active publication assets prevents broken builds and missing file errors. By stripping code fences prior to asset discovery and hashing archive paths, publishing pipelines remain resilient against common documentation patterns.
